Default UMA OS Update for Bold 9900

Any new info on an update to the OS that will allow UMA calling on Rogers for Talkspot? I have a 9900 and a Talkspot feature I can't use yet, lol.

Anyone hear an update on this? I tried tweeting @RogersBuzz and they said "we don't comment on releases before they may/may not arrive. You may want to ask the manufacturer though." I replied that this question was carrier specific since Sprint already has v7.1 and the reply was "they're still provided by the manufacturer. Then Rogers will test the software on the network."

My question would then be if 7.1 is available from RIM for Sprint to test and release, wouldn't it be available for Rogers and then they would release it after testing? Does RIM build the OS for the carrier or do they build a generic (for lack of a better term) OS and the carrier tweaks it for their network?

Use the leak 7.1 or other hybrids out for the 9900. I'm using max v3 (I think It is) and its great and has wifi calling which works fairly well

Does one have to pay exrta for the wifi calling? My brother inlaw has a 9810 with rogers. If I upgrade his torch to 7.1 will he be able to use this wifi calling? Thanks

I can only speak with certainty about Rogers but if you have the Talkspot service (or whatever they're calling it these days) wifi calls do not cost anything for local or long distance when UMA is displayed on your screen depending on the service you are payng for. If you are not paying for the service, you may see UMA on your screen BUT any calls made will count against your plan.

No app is required for wifi calls but it is dependant on whether or not your carrier offers it. It is dependant on the OS build provided by your carrier.

I'll try that, thanks! I hate having a service I can't use yet, lol. I had it with my last BB but upgraded.

jc_halifax or Habs_fan: So did you ever get UMA working on your 7.1 OS release for 9900? I just updated my phone (Rogers 9900) and can't get it to work. I don't have talkspot installed and want to get it working. In the condo where I live or in some of the buildings I'm in, the wireless signal drops and I like being able to switch to wi-fi to maintain the call.

Thanks!

Actually, yes! Installed the hybrid operating system on the weekend and so far everything works like a charm including the wifi calling! Battery life shows an incredible improvement as well.

It works for me as well, been using it for almost a month now, it still needs some work, but its a lot better than not having a signal

Alright! So I've read somewhere on CrackBerry that you don't need to subscribe and pay for Talkspot. You can still use the service but the only thing you'd be using is your talk time from your phone plan instead of having unlimited calling.

If neither of you have subscribed to Talkspot, can you post a quick how-to article? I'm still searching CrackBerry right now to figure it out. Thanks!

Well, I have subscribed to Talkspot but the procedure is the same. You just connect to wifi as if you want to browse the internet. Your signal indicator will change to a rectangular symbol that has a phone on one side and the wifi symbol on the other and voila! You are able to call on wifi. You are correct though, that any wifi minutes will come off your plan where the Talkspot feature gives you unlimited calling local or LD depending on what you signed up for.

Hmm. Did Rogers have to send you some service books for Talkspot?
