Rogers can't be that dumb, they must know these things work. But to be honest, how many people are savvy enough to make them work? Or the moral implications......

I think this is the little bonus built into the Rogers plan, just like Telus, don't advertise that you are offering unlimited web browsing, but if you know how to use it, then <ching> - 02-05-2008, 09:41 PM #78
Bender, I think you are on the right track, however, none of these Apps that we have working other than e-mail and BB Messenger are pre-loaded on Rogers phones. So for one thing, as far as Rogers knows, without OTA installs we can't get third party software, and for two, how does Rogers *know* that this stuff exists? I mean, I'm sure they do, but they can't prove anything! And thirdly, how could they possibly block our data usage any more than they possibly could?

No I don't think the intention is to restrict access more. I don't really think they can. Since we all have unlimited blackberry internet data, I have no fear of being charged. Or them actually being able to successfully filter anything.

Good job for looking into things blundell! This is relief for many new customers wanting to get in on these freebies.
I think Rogers knows about it, or at least peopel that for rogers, cause this is what their job would be - for all I know they are lurking this site and these threads right now lol.
As for google maps not working I think it an even greateter miss then hit than trying to get opera to work. I tried loading opera on my friends phone tonight and wasnt successful - though I just transfered the program from my device to his without using a data sim in his phone.
Hopefully rogers will make our life easy and just come out with a $20 unl data plan like US carriers - 02-05-2008, 10:49 PM #82
Yes, didn't you know that Rogers will give you an unlimited data plan for life for free if you narc on people using workarounds??

Oh yeah! I got all of your pins and everything! Seriously, I'm sure Rogers does have people who troll the forums! But we can't get paranoid, can we?

I noticed that live search uses media.com for its gateway APN. Should this worry me at all? I thought that was the APN for MMS data, and rogers charges big for MMS I thought.250 DAY, 100 CDN LD, U/L E/W 6PM, UIC, MY5 CAN-WIDE, VM, CID, 125 SMS, R2R SMS, 500MB BB = $34.45 + TAX - 02-05-2008, 11:15 PM #86
Warning on Live Search
Live Search defaults to use media.com as its network connection (same as MMS data) it will not connect when you try direct HTTP.
I would advise NOT using it, until it can be confirmed that I am not charged for the few seconds of it I used. - 02-06-2008, 06:51 AM #87
I guess Google Maps it will have to be! I've hidden the icon for WLS until it can be confirmed it's chargeable. IT sucks for me, because I only picked it up this weekend, and THOSE charges won't appear on my bill until March 10 or so!

Ah that's a drag fraser! I'm not sure when the last day is for my billing period. I know that its soon though. I just hid the WLS as well just so I'm not tempted to use it. If we do get charged for using it, it is going to be a huge pain in the *** because google maps won't load on my phone. Ill be stranded without the use of my maps!!!

I'm sure there has to be a way to get Google Maps working again on your device--but anything I can think of, you've probably already done. When you loaded these apps, did you use TCP via Wifi or someone else's sim card?

After doing a quick bit of research, I have a theoretical theory. According to Wikipedia:
We must be going through the WAP APN, from which all traffic from BB Messenger and Emails goes. The Web/Internet APN must be the one being metered by the provider. If this holds true, then yes, theoretically, if Opera can use the WAP APN, it shows just like mail/IM traffic and so is unmetered/unlimited. Hopefully if it is, hooray for Opera! In most cellular networks there are two types of APNs: the usual WAP APN, enabling access to the default WAP content (or the operator's walled garden) and a second type, known as Internet or WEB APN, which enables access to all content. The WAP APN normally filters non-WAP content by traffic, ports or volume. The Internet/Web APN is normally unfiltered and often the operator will charge a higher tariff for it. Handhelds, Laptops and smartphones normally need to use the Internet/Web APN when using applications or an HTML browser - 02-06-2008, 11:44 AM

Fraser - I used my tcp / wifi for all my apps so far. But I can't even load google maps to even mess around with any connection settings
Stiki - can you load the program with your sim, but only actually work it with someone elses sim? I'm trying to see if it freezes upon loading with your sim?

Davey - I installed it with someone else's SIM, ran BB Maps first, then ran Google Maps. Everything went smoothly. Then I changed the APN Settings back to blank and swapped in my SIM. I don't have a freezing problem. After getting the no connection error, nothing happens. The map stays blank but its not frozen because i can still access the menus. I have tried over 10 battery pulls!
I was fine using Live Search for mapping until I learnt on here that it might not be free so I too have hidden the icon until I receive my bill or hear from others.StikiGreenZ - BlackBerry BOLD 9900, BlackBerry Playbook - 02-06-2008, 03:57 PM #95
I got Google Maps to work by surfing to google.com on my Wifi Browser, installed Google Maps 2.0.1.
Since this morning the program was giving me nothing but headaches, it was either freezing, giving me a sim.net.device error or I would select it and it wouldnt do anything.
About 30 mins ago I swapped a sim from a phone w/no dataplan (it was in a locked to rogers) K790 booted up my 8320 went to google maps and it loaded. I accepted the Terms & voila! It worked.
I did a battery pull, put in my sim and it still works!
Thanks to everyone! - 02-06-2008, 05:57 PM #96

In This forum:
http://forums.crackberry.com/f73/rog...billing-17122/
Brucewayne says that he got his bill with no extra charges, and that he was in fact using windows live search.
This makes me wonder if windows live search is really chargeable??? - 02-11-2008, 11:11 AM #99
Hi guys,
Totally new to this site and stumbled across it looking for info on this new $15 email plan.
I just picked up a Blackberry Curve and all I have is a voice plan (no data whatsoever). I've tried reading through all these threads and I think I get the gist of it but I'm still confused. I just wanted to clarify some things before I go ahead and add teh $15 email plan.
All I've done so far is downloaded Opera to my PC and uploaded via Application Loader. As far as I can tell from these threads, all I have to do now is add the $15 plan and I can surf unlimited via Opera with no issues. Is that correct? Or do I have to change some of the settings?
Also, what about WLS or Google Maps? I've read some posts that say you can use WLS but you get charged, others say it's free. And some of them say you need to use someone else's sim with data, get pay as you go, or add a data plan yourself.
I don't have any of those things and my only option would be to add a data plan. I don't see a $5 or $10 data plan anywhere for Rogers. And if I add it...do I have to keep it for a whole billing cycle or can I add it...download WLS/Google Maps, then switch to the $15 email plan?
Anyways, sorry for the long *** post. Basically all I want to know is...is there anything I need to do to surf on Opera other than loading it to my phone and adding the email plan? And for other apps like WLS or Google Maps, what do I need to do if I don't have data and don't know anyone else with data?
Thanks in advance! - 02-11-2008, 01:16 PM

Hey! Welcome aboard!
For Opera Mini 4 you just need to get teh $15 email and im plan and you should be good. *however* some times itwont work on the first try, you may need to get doing battery pulls and restarting until it works (can be a pain some times). But for the lucky ones (such as myself) it worked the first try. You can use someones data plan to make it work guaranteed.
AS for WLS or Google Maps, you need someones data sim to put in your card, and then change the APN settings on your phone to internet.com and then download the programs and run it so it configures it then you should be good. Google maps is free, but can be a pain to get working as well (still doesnt work for me). WLS is simple and works right away. AS for the billing we will all be receiving our bills shortly. I used mine quite a bit this weekend so I am going to cry if I get charged.
Yes you can add an actual data plan on your phone and then switch it up the next month (just be sure to call and say you want to switch it to the unlimited email and IM before the billing cycle is over so you dont have to pay for another month
Hope this helps
