Default rogers roaming charges with bbm

Yes, I know this has been answered but everyone elses replies confuse me. I'm from canada and I am going to vegas next week and I am planning on meeting someone there. The only way we can communicate is threw bbm. Can I use bbm without getting roaming charges. Or is there a way I can use it with out getting them? If you can answer this with a simple explanation that would be great

You will be charged. Just get their basic data roaming charge for 25 bucks and you are good to go. Or just buy a prepaid sim card and use the sms feature.

Understand that your service plan (including your data plan) covers you while you and your BlackBerry are physically located in your coverage area (ie at home, in your home area, etc).

BBM is including in this for "free" (ie no extra charge) when you are still physically located within your coverage area. And you can communicate with anyone no matter where they are located for "free" (ie no extra charge).

However, once you are physically located OUTSIDE YOUR COVERAGE AREA, this no longer applies. You will have roaming charges from your carrier or you need to get a service plan that covers the area in which are you then located..

As long as you use your phone's WIFI and you're able to find open hotspots where you'll be travelling to, you can use BBM and not get charged for it. I did that when I was travelling overseas.

Just make sure you have mobile network turned off by unchecking it under mobile network connections. That way you'll ensure you won't incur data charges.

The data roaming charges in the US are .006 cents a kb. If all you are going to do is send a few messages without sending pictures it would be cheaper to pay that, then to get the travel bundle for $25. That .006 translates to just over $6/mb

I'm in the same boat as the OP.

Just to clarify...I purchased 15 min of talk time for the US. But no data pack. If i shut roaming data off on my berry but connect to wifi, I will not be charged for using bbm/email, etc. Correct?

I'm off to Vegas next week and would love to have this verified, i.e. data services turned on, but off while roaming; connection preference set to wi-fi only, mobile network "none", and network selection mode "automatic".

From what I'm reading this should allow me to use BBM with the group I'm travelling with for free, provided I'm in a hotspot. Perhaps minimal data usage, but none of the astronomical international roaming charges.

Yes?

2 Things, YES, those settings will keep you good for using ONLY on wifi

BUT you can prepurchase data, if you are gone only for 1 week, I suggest purchasing 10MB of data for $30

IF people don't send you stupid amounts of email, and you keep BBM simple 10MB will be more than enough as I use about 1-2MB per day while in the US with heavy txt based usage

Thanks, deRusett. I won't be using any more than a couple BBMs a day, so $30 is way more than I want to spend.

I guess I just needed some affirmation so the wife doesn't kill me if I turn out to be wrong about the whole thing!
