Default Rogers Bold 9900 Off Contract

Well, I've decided it isn't cost effective to upgrade early, so I want to buy a Bold 9900 off contract. Any suggestions for the best price on a Rogers Bold 9900? I looked at the Rogers site ($599) and it seems that Future Shop and Best Buy don't sell Rogers product off contract although they do list Bell for the same price. Not necessarily stuck on a Rogers unit but that's my carrier at the moment. Having said that, has anyone experienced any issues with another carrier's version of this phone on the Rogers network?

You'd have to get it unlocked, or try kijiji website.

If I recall correctly, Virgin Mobile sells the hardware outright for the lowest price and their phones have no branding on the chassy of the phone or in the software, so no "VIRGIN" vanity plates anywhere. You'd then just have to get it unlocked.

You can buy a GSM Blackberry 9900 from Ebay or Craigslist and get it unlocked.
Blackberry unlocking will make your Blackberry device work with any GSM carrier so you can get a phone, unlock it and use it with your Rogers SIM card.

There are also Rogers devices sold online so you can get one without unlocking but to switch a carrier you will need it (your Blackberry handset) to be unlocked.

Virgin is the best way to go and you can go back to them if there are any hardware issues.

I get lots of phones off Kijiji when I'm in between upgrades and never had an issue. For the last several months until I got my 9810, I was using and unlocked 9800 from Telus with zero issues.

A possible consideration before getting a non-Rogers branded phone for use on the Rogers network is Wi-Fi calling (UMA). While it is possible for non-Rogers BB's to get UMA via the engineering screens, it's easiest to use a Rogers branded BB.

Disclaimer: I do not know offhand if 99xx's are UMA capable. I also do not know if, that if the hardware is there, if the software is enabled for UMA. (e.g. my 9700 did not have UMA enabled until a later OS update which enabled it).

If UMA isn't a consideration for you, the excellent advice given above should be good for you.

That's a good point about UMA, thanks. I do use that. I know the 9900 does not have that capability at the moment but I am told is coming in the next month or so via software update.

The best bet would be to purchase one off kijiji or craigslist. I bought my Rogers branded 9900 brand new from a Rogers rep for $500.

Well, problem solved....sort of. I just read that I won a Bold 9900 in the Crackberry/Telenav contest! However, upon reading the prize again it looks like it comes with a 2-year T-mobile contract so I'm not sure how that will work since I live in Canada! Wait for the e-mail I guess.

Default rather expensive

I would hold off in terms of renewing your contract as new devices such as the qnx devices might be approaching soon. 600 + tax + 35$ admin fee for the 9900 is very expensive and quite frankly not worth it...

Try Kijiji or craigslist, those are your best bets and you will save out on sales taxes.

Hope this helps.

hes asking for a 9900 and there is no indication that the first 9900 will be like the bold form factor (indact i think mostbb users will not initally love it due to full touch.)

there have been a few in he 9900 forums that have said they purchased a device from bell and found the phone was unlocked (when purchased) not sure if that is still the casw. regardless, bell bbs are typically unbranded.
