Default I've got unlimited social networking with roger but not data...

Hi guys,
I've just bought a blackberry torch with rogers yesterday with a 3 year student 40$ unlimited social networking contract, which doesnt include data. The weird thing is that I go on twitter and click on the external links, which link me to the browser. So now I find out that although i havnt got a plan with data, i am still able to use the data plan features. My question is will I get extra charges if i get on the web? for example using the browser to get on some websites that have nothing to do with social netwroking. Also, will I get extra charges for using window live messenger with my 40$ student plan? Thanks!

Yes you probably will get extra charges for browsing the web. That is not Social Networking related, usually you have to use the apps to access those features like facebook and twitter.

For the Windows Live Messenger it is included in the plan so you would be fine for that. Just beware of the browsing

Also I would make sure by calling Rogers CS. As Rogers pay per use data charge is 3 cents/kb.

I was under the impression that that accounts with social networking only would not get the browser service books pushed to their device, so browsing should not work. My daughter has a similar plan with Telus, and her browser doesn't function at all. I did however manage to install Opera Mini and that did work for browsing without any extra charges.

Right now, you'd be charged for using your browser if you only have the social networking package. I have the $30 BB add-on from Rogers for social networking, and I just got them to disable my browser that would be used through the network so that I'm not being charged extra. You can use your browser when you're on Wi-Fi though, and you won't be charged.

Hopefully that helps.

Yes u are being charged for pay per use which is 3 cents per KB which is a lot. I called the Rogers CS and got my data for the browser disabled but was able to use it on WiFi at no extra cost. Trust me disable the data for the browser does make a big difference and I definitely recommend it.

\this is correct and TRUE for all [canadian] carriers.

I'm surprised external links even open up for you! If you must browse, do it over WiFi [inconvenient at times] or get a 500mb+ plan to get rid of that useless 'social' add-on.

Unless something changed within the last year or 2, with rogers installing some sort of data sniffing bot, they are not able to distinguish the data you are transmitting from the social network only apps to web actual browsing. At least this was my understanding a few years back when BBs were starting to become popular and there were loopholes with program such as opera mini, viigo, weather eye etc that worked when on email only plans etc...
