Default How often can I do a hardware upgrade?

So I got my 9700 back in April 2010. Just wondering when the next time I can upgrade my phone without the extra early upgrade fee. I'm hearing 2 different sides. One side is that I would be able to upgrade 24 months into my contract and the other side is that I would be able to upgrade 6 months left of my contract. Which one would it be?

Waiting the full 24month, would make you eligible for a full discounted price on a 3yr term.
Anything before 24months will get you partial discounts.

So I'm really confused now. I just called Rogers and they said every 30 months for smartphones and 24 months for non smartphones. I decided to google it and came across this:

Yea they sell the high price devices and they make more money if their users can't upgrade it.. the longer you have a device that you have paid for with a contract the value of the device drops and they got a good revenue.

The 24 months is for things like rocket sticks, mifi, netbooks and rocket hubs.

All phones have a 30 month upgrade policy. You can upgrade early but the prices vary depending on what type of phone you have.

$20 per every month early on premium smarthphones. (ie. torch, iphone 4)
$15 per every month early on all other smartphones
$10 per month on all others phones.

Regardless, its still 30 month on all those phones. Hope this clears things up.

its until you have 6 months left. Therefore your 12 months early on your upgrade.

Your early upgrade fee would be $180 (12months x $15).
Prices of the phones on upgrade are also primarily listed at $50 more than new customer pricing, but you do receive a $50 mail-in/online rebate.

For example, if you wanted the new bold which is $169.99 on a 3yr term this is what your upgrade would look like:

$219.99 + $180 early upgrade fee + $35 admin fee = 434.99 ($491.54 after HST). Once you apple your $50 mail-in/online rebate, you would be looking at $441.54.

Also, upgrades are not always based on how much time you have left on your contract. Many people renew multiple times during one contract (retentions may offer a better plan). Your upgrade is 30 months from the last time you upgraded/activated. So say you started a brand new contract yesterday but you havnt upgraded or activated in 30 months, then you'll still be eligible.

Wow, can they do that? I got my phone in May 2010 and was told it was 24 months to upgrade - out of curiosity I want to see how much it would cost me to upgrade early, thinking it would be $60 - and I got $165! This is very unfortunate - I was expecting to upgrade this June now I hear I need to wait until November.

I don't see how they think this will make them money - at that point you're only 6 months from the expiry date of your contract anyway. Why not wait until then and get a new phone even cheaper on a cheaper plan?

30 months or 6 months left on your contract i believe

Rogers/telus/bell change their upgrade policy all the time, and they never inform any of their customers about the new policies they have, when i got my bold 9000 back in 2008 of dec i managed to get the torth 9800 in september 2010 without any problems. my brother got the bold in may 2009 and in august 2011 when the new 9900 came out they charged him 500 for an early activation.

my girlfriend is with telus and when she called telus to upgrade her phone back in november they said in January she could do it, when january came around she called them again and said she wont be able to do it until march.

update: february 17 - so i called rogers asking how much it would be to have an early upgrade, I managed to get the torch 9800 on a 3 year renewal on the first day it came out back in september.. the rep said i wouldnt be available for a hardward upgrade until march 2013/30months in i asked if i was able to do it today and it came out to be $410 with a $50 rebate bringing the phone down to 360 for a 3 year renewal.. isnt to bad if you ask me

update!
recently got a bold 9900 for a hardware upgrade since my 9800 died on me
came out to be 290ish after 50$ rebate.. not bad since i only had my torch for about 18 months out of a 36 month term
so it doesnt matter about length anymore
