Default Fido wifi outside of Canada

Hi,

I have a tmobile bold 9700 unlocked on the fido network. I have tried using wifi calling with the tmobile sim card in Canada with success. Now I am trying to add wifi calling from Fido because I am going overseas and would like to call Canada for free. The fido rep is reading the notes about adding wifi calling and he is telling me that it is not possible to make wifi calls outside of Canada.

Is this possible? From my understanding of how it works it doesn't really make sense? If you are connected to the internet it shouldn't matter where it is? Especially if I have the radio turned off....

TIA for any help.

p.s. any euro data sim cards (or reasonable voice) recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Taking a telus 9550 and tmobile 9700 (both unlocked)

if ip address is not Canadian, uma wont work for rogers/fido devices.
I am not sure if unlocked tmobile device will work. But to be safe, just disable mobile network, if you can make phone calls, that would be great and it wont incur any long distance charges.
