Default Early cancellation fee

Ok, so what's the latest early cancellation fee with Rogers? I have a Curve 8900 and want to upgrade to a Bold 9900 but they want to charge me $150 early upgrade plus the $199 for the phone plus the $35 admin fee. I can go to Future Shop or Best Buy and get a 9900 for $49 on a 3-year contract with Bell. I want to be prepared to follow through if they don't want to negotiate and call my bluff. I was talking with a friend of mine who was trying to upgrade through the retention dept and apparently they aren't as accommodating as they once were.

Rogers will charge you a Maximum of up to 400$ to cancel your account. With a Maximum of up to 100$ for the Data on your plan.
So your looking to pay 500$ to Cancel.
A neat thing rogers has...With new activations we offer 100$ off a new device..one being the 9900. Activation fee is waived and 35$ is credited on your bill.

Thanks for the info about the maximum, but what is the per month charge? I have about 10 months left on my contract so surely I wouldn't hit the max.

You can ask them that which you did say that they said $150.

That was the early upgrade fee. I am under the impression they are different amounts. I can't keep track of all these fees, lol.

He is correct.

10$ a month for a regular phone.
20$ if you have a smartphone.

Seeing as you have a BB, your paying 20$ for every month thats left on your contract.

Ohh okay, sorry.

If he doesn't have the 9900 yet, I don't think he'd have to pay $20 per month for the rest of the contract. Not sure if this would be related since it's for upgrading but wouldn't it be $15?

Seems like there's a little confusion here. Here are how the cancellation fees work.

Voice - $20 a month for each remaining month with a minimum of $100 and a maximum of $400 (Plus applicable taxes).

Data - $5 a month for each remaining month with a minimum of $25 and a maximum of $100 (Plus applicable taxes).

If you have a $150 early upgrade fee, then you would likely be 10 months early from full upgrade eligibility which is 30 months. This would also mean that you likely have 16 months left on your contract. Therefore your early cancellation fees would look something like this.

Voice - $20 x 16 months = $320
Data - $5 x 16 months = $80

So all together you would likely be looking at $400 early cancellation fee.

Ok, that's clear now. Thanks.

I have to verify the time left on my contract but I think your estimates are right.

Your on the right track but not entirely correct. Early upgrade fees generally work like this:

$10 a month QMD/non-smartphones
$15 a month for smartphones
$20 a month for premium smartphones (I.e. Blackberry Torch, Iphone 4)

*You cannot use the early upgrade option until at least 6 months after your last upgrade.
**Early upgrade fees are added ontop of the cost of the phone. Upgrade prices are generally $50 more than new customer pricing but receive an applicable $50 rebate. Essentially makes it new customer pricing.
***There is also usually a $35 administration fee on top of the upgrade fee.
