That said, I've not gotten anywhere near my 500 MB limit, having moved from BlackBerry to iPhone (Yahoo sync issue) - and I'm doing the same things I did with my BB and roughly the same Apps.

Then again, it could be that I'm able to let wi-fi do a lot more of the heavy lifting (web browsing on a better browser, video and audio streaming - like TuneIn), as the iPhone has been a lot less likely to throw a hissy fit over wi-fi connectivity at places like Starbucks.

Though some basic tests while in the US, the iPhone on basic tasks used 4x the data that the Blackberry does, with the exception of streaming content, when steaming video, or music, the data usage is near identical.

if you have regular access to open wifi, then you'll probably never hit your data limit, I have a 6GB plan with Rogers and I barely ever break 1GB with improved wifi connectivity in my Torch.

coming from an iphone 3GS to a BlackBerry torch ( Aug 2010)
i can give you MY data consumption.
with the 3GS i'm getting 1.6-2.0 GB/ month
with the Torch i'm getting close to 0.6 GB

and here's the funny part.. i never tethered my iphone ( since i have a USB broadband plan before)
now, with the Torch i'm tethering about an hour a day 3 times a week when i am away from the office or any Free Wi-Fi area.

Just for reference, I used a 3GS for under a month and came up on my 500mb limit very very quickly. I normally use 450-500 on my Bold, and I got like two weks in and switched back to avoid extra costs.

Same thing happened with my HTC magic also.

Blackberry compresses data when in use.
So you can do the exact same thing on an iPhone as the Blackberry but the iPhone would consume more data.

But of course, the iPhone will display videos nicer.

Info as provided by Rogers:

500MB - Blackberry
= 5000 text emails
= 4000 web pages
= 300 photo uploads/downloads
= 50 minutes on Youtube

500MB - iPhone
= 2500 Text Emails
= 2000 Web Pages
= 100 photo uploads/downloads
- 50 minutes on Youtube

If you are doing most of your heavy stuff on wi-fi then you won't get anywhere the max 500 mb, however once you start getting away from wi-fi spots then you're going to chew up your data, i.e. travelling, even on a regular commute.

I have 6 GB on my BB Torch and I open up everything (pdfs, spreadsheets etc), tether it to my PB when I'm out and about (using it very heavily and with lots of detemination) I probably get just barely over 1GB. Also I get on average 75 emails a day of which I need to take action on at least 60 of them in a form of some kind of response.

Good luck with keeping your data usage in check. My co-workers like you only have 500 mb and they have to be very careful about opening and downloading their emails. No push emails for them.
