    Default Calling Long Distance Free....

    Using wi-Fi on my BB Pearl 8220 without using talkspot. Is it possible?

    If I open up my wifi on my home internet connection I can use wifi for my internet on my phone, does it work the same with voice calling?

    So Did I read this app right? As long as I use this app, I would only be charged .039 cents per min. to make a long distance call in Canada? No extra charges anywhere?

    Would it matter if I have a My5CanadaWide option on my current plan where those calls are free?

    i'm not familiar with guerrillatel, i want to try it myself so i'll wait for the OP to respond. however, i CAN answer your question about the rate...you'll be charged 0.039 dollars per minute...that's 3.9 cents per minute

    Without TalkSpot, you should still be able to use UMA. However, call's will be billed the same as usual. The difference will be call quality.

    stew721 got it right, you can use uma, but will be billed as per your usual plan.

    However, I was recently roaming out of town, and I used wifi uma when I wanted to call numbers in my home town (which was across the country) which would be billed as local (UMA bills as if you are in your home calling area). Then I would switch off wifi and use the rogers edge to dial the "local" numbers in that town. It was a pain to be constantly switching, but I effectively got free long distance.

    I have the MY5 and put the calling card number in there. Now I am only charged on the calling card for LD calls.

    Doesn't work if I am roaming though of course.

    a lot of calling cards have a list of many local numbers.

    But yeah, my 5 is great for that, I have an asterisk server at home, so I put my home number on my My5 and now I can call anywhere and have it be a "free" call using my5.

    Default Yak

    I signed up for Yak.ca awhile back and its been good. I get 3.5 cents a minute and it has local numbers for quite a few cities, as-well-as a callback number if you have free incoming.

    So its not UMA and its not free but its decent. There are alot of these services in Canada but Yak was the one that looked least shady and didn't require me to pay upfront. So I was not losing anything by having the option of cheap long distance.

    ps Everytime I use UMA I get really bad call reception so I tend to stick with airtime.

    pps I like your style TenOfZero. As soon as Google Voice is in Canada you will be able to do a similar thing with free long distance all over Canada and US.

    Yep, I'm in Victoria and I use the Nuvo brand calling card. It has a number local to here.

    3.5 cents is not so good, my calling card is something like 2.3 cents a minute.

    There were cheaper ones, but this is the best one I have found that has local numbers and doesn't require me to prepay like a calling card.

    If I were calling alot cheaper is better, but for $1.00 a month I like getting billed per use and not prepaying.

    Ok, gotcha. I usually average about $25 a month on my calling card overseas so I am a rather heavy user.

    I believe Yak has 1500 International minutes per month for $29.95 a month; which is ~$0.02/minute.

    Ok, I'll check it out. If I uncrease my regular calling to over $25 a month it might be worth checking out.

    A question for those that have used it, what is the quality of the service? Anything I should know?

    Thanks!

    Call quality for Canada-Canada is great, compares with my shaw home phone. No experience with International.

    The Service has worked as advertised, no problems.

    Just a heads up. It appears the 1500 for $29.95 has some restrictions on it. But it appears to be most of the popular places to call. There is a list on the site(I couldn't post the link because of my post count)

    I signed up, just waiting for confirmation.

    I called both the calling card company and checked out the site and the rates are exactly the same for calling to my overseas destinations. I also see for cell plans the unlimited is unlimited, never saw anything about a time cap. It is probably buried in there somewhere.

    If this works well I am going to add a couple friends to my account, I will cover the cost as they don't always have the cash to call their families in China. Combined with MY5 this should be pretty great, no more 30 second warnings when the calling card runs out.

    Thanks for putting me on to this! I will post a review of the overseas quality once I get it fully activated.

    OK, initial results are in for my test, yak.ca vs. Nuvo calling card. This isn't really an accurate test as I on;y did this once but hey, it's something.

    Nuvo first, tried to dial mainland China 5 times, first 4 would fail to connect and on the 5th got my usual call quality, a little fuzzy.

    yak.ca was impressive, immediately connected and crystal clear.

    All to the same person in Fuzhou. I am going to stick with yak.ca, seems to be the winner.

    Additional follow up, since I have used yak.ca I have gotten excellent call quality and no missed connections overseas.

    I admit, far better than a calling card.

    I am hooked, period.

    Not to mention I put the number in the MY5 list so no charges for using it.

    My5 CanadaWide costs $25 per month. Those calls aren't free. It's $25 per month, every month... whether you use it or not.

    GuerrillaTel is 3.9 cents per min. In other words, for $20, you'll get slightly more than 500 long distance minutes to anywhere in Canada or the US. The big difference, however, is that you might only use 250 minutes in a month... therefore, only spending $10 (using GT), not $25 (Rogers My5). You'll only use up airtime, if you cannot receive inbound local calls for free at the time you place the call (e.g. not evenings or weekends). No other charges. No connection fees. Nothing. Na da. Zippo. WYSIWYG.

    NB: GuerrillaTel cannot get around roaming charges. It only works on your own network.

    Yak's $29.95/mo looks good, but is limited to only these countries:

    * Austria
    * Australia
    * Belgium
    * China - Land and Mobile
    * Cyprus
    * Denmark
    * France
    * Germany
    * Greece
    * Hong Kong – Land and Mobile
    * Hungary
    * Ireland
    * Israel
    * Italy
    * Norway
    * Netherlands
    * Portugal
    * Russia – St Petersburg and Moscow Only
    * Mexico – Mexico City Only
    * Brazil – Rio and Sao Paulo Only
    * Argentina – Buenos Aires Only
    * Singapore – Land and Mobile
    * South Korea
    * Spain
    * Sweden
    * Switzerland
    * Taiwan
    * United Kingdom

    ... plus, read the fine print, this monthly rate is limited to LANDLINE destinations (except within Canada and the US). If you call a mobile phone or outside of this limited list, you're getting whacked with their regular rates IN ADDITION TO the $29.95. Not so great, is it?

    Pay only for what you need at GuerrillaTel

    Check out the real rates here:
    GuerrillaTel

    GT has nothing to hide, you can even check the exact phone number you are dialing internationally here:
    GuerrillaTel

    Get rid of My5. Get unlimited inbound local calling. And, use GT's app. It's good for your wallet.

    Yup. 3.9 cents per minute. Or, 500+ min for $20 in US and Canada (excl Alaska, Hawaii, and CDN territories).

    Other good international rates (cents/min):

    Athens 5.0
    Hong Kong 3.0
    London 3.9
    Mexico City 5.0
    Moscow 4.1
    Paris 4.4
    Tel Aviv 4.8

    ... these are best rates usually to landlines (there are rate differences b/w land + mobile, urban / rural, etc).

    For exact rates to an exact phone number type into their rate checker here: GuerrillaTel
