Default After 14 years....bye to Rogers....their choice not mine

Apologies for the soliloquy here, but I'm a little surprised at how easily Rogers let me go....

I've been a great customer of theirs for the past 16 years and seen ARPU with them as high as $600 to $700 per month as costs of roaming and data came down to about $120 per month.

My company is switching to Telus so I had to switch my main mobile number (and received a great 9810 in the process). I've been using an unlocked Torch and haven't had an upgrade from Rogers since I got my old 9000 the week it came out.

I told Rogers that I wanted to maintain an account with them and asked to give me a new line with a new number. All I asked is that my current hardware upgrade eligibility be maintained, as I anticipate picking up either an IP5 or an Android device over the next couple of months.

The "save" rep told me that if my current number was ported, my upgrade eligibility would be calculated based on the history of my new number, and that I'd be better off to close the account and that I'd get a better offer signing up as a new customer when they offer a device that I'd like.

I was a little shocked....closed my account, and think I may open a new account with Bell to get a Galaxy II.

After 16 years, I'm no longer "tethered" to Rogers! I'm just surprised that, particularly given my willingness to open a new account, they wouldn't offer something.

That's pretty much been my experience as well. I've read through a large post on a forum a while ago about how to talk to retentions and it hasn't helped me get anything either. Now I just sign up as a new customer after my contract's expired and port my number over. Rogers (and others?) seem to care more about new signups a lot of the time than they do in keeping their existing customers. Sad, but maybe their reward structure is setup for that or something?

It is definitely a hit or miss with retentions
Being a Rog customer for the last 12 years myself, I was also forced to cancel all services and move on.
Oddly enough, before end the 30day cancellation period, Rog called me back and settled everything along with additional credits to keep me.

Same situation here, im in the process of switching to bell myself, retentions didnt help and, signing up to bell got me 5 new phones 9900s at 79.99 each and a plan that rogers wasnt even able to come close to with price. Rogers wanted me to open a new account and sell me new 9900 at 149 and wasnt willing to budge the price of the plans :S

Mostly it's sad to loss something you are used too... but sometimes a change is needed to start a new way.

You have Bell / Telus, I wish you to get good deal
