Why do people start their threads with the word, "so"? As in, "So, I bought a Q10 and ...." I've seen it done with the word "ok" too. "Ok, I bought a Q10 and..." Is this some kind of new trend or what?

It's considered a transitional word. It connects their thinking with the text box.

I understand that it's used as a transitional or connection word. The hilarious thing that they are not transitioning. They are beginning from square one.

It doesn't bother me anymore than someone with an annoying voice bothers me. It kind of throws whatever they are trying to say into a spin and makes it just a bit less valid for me.

Seems to be a new trend. I don't know when it started, but it's the last couple of years or so I've really noticed people at work answer direct questions starting with 'So...'. Seems like they're just stalling to come up with a more believable lie.

It's just like when people say "ummm..." but now it's changed to "so..." It's how people speak. Not much you can do about it real life, but in writing people should really edit out all that stuff before posting.

It's an odd trend I guess. I get the way of it being a transition statement but why not just give it a more descriptive title.
Eh whatever is how I feel about it.

That's my point. I get using it when talking and I'm sure I do it without noticing it but when typing?....... it just seems pretty silly and funny. LOL Why not type out that you just cleared your throat before making your point?

Because it lends the writing a feeling of "unsure-ity" (if that's a word) because they're not actually sure how to go about saying what they want to say; it gives it more emotion. I'd rather people just stick to italicising and bolding their words, myself. Not a big fan of smilies or "LOL"s either.

Internet has become a place for strangers to casually interact with each other. It emulate an actual social setting where strangers meet. It's a way to break the ice or start a conversation.

Ok, so I think, like, it's kinda like people who like, say "like" all the time, and like, they can't, like, really help it. So, like, we're gonna have to, like, deal with it.

By the way, I'm not one of those people lol

While we're on somewhat of a similar subject.............. THERE IS NO SUCH WORD AS "ALOT"! IT'S TWO WORDS. "A" AND "LOT". There is much more where that came from but I don't want to go nuts.
