I can't be the only one who sees Microsoft rolling out "Windows10" and thinks they're stealing a page from Blackberry's book about skipping a few version numbers to mark a dramatic change in software.

Don't get me wrong, I think RIM/BlackBerry was more than justified about calling BB10 OS what it is because it was a complete and total departure from the old software to a totally new QNX core.

But, come on Microsoft - you brought old features back into the mix with the Start Menu and taskbar, AND you're trying to say it's so revolutionary that you needed to skip the Windows 9 moniker, going straight to 10? Oh please! Cut the copycat, we've been there, done that ... but we actually had a REASON!

I don't get why it's such a big deal? If anything, to me it sounds better and if they are imitating than that means BB10 sounded cool...

I remember BlackBerry changing the name of their OS from OS10 to BB10 after Apple complained (not sure if it was corporate or followers). Seems like the same thing to me here.

A slow climb to the top is always more rewarding. Sent using my BlackBerry Z10.

    Actually,..

BB10 was originally called BBX, due to the fact that it was a BlackBerry built on QNX. However an existing software company called BBX asserted their trademark on the name, and forced BlackBerry to rename its new OS to BB10, as in X = Roman numeral 10.

I think Bo Derek has fair claims to "10".

Confirmed: BlackBerry invented the number 10

but in all serious, OP, you're say off base in your assumptions there are a few "albeit valid" points as to why they skipped 9

    1) They wanted to distance themselves from the Windows 8 branding.
    2) This is probably going to be the last major release of Windows and they wanted to end on a good number and 9 isn't great because....
    3) In many Asian countries, 9 is a very unlucky number (think like our 13) because it sounds like something like death or something like that, but I can't remember the exact word
    4) Believe it or not, but there are actually a lot of programs that people still use that are compatible with Windows 95 and 98, and some people are theorizing that the way the code works, Windows 9 would be autodetected by these programs and would assume that "Windows 9" was actually suppose to be Windows 95 or 98, and would cause a lot of compatibility with these programs (albeit, this is for enterprise who use old software, not consumers).

    So yeah, that's settled.
