I have a four year-old Acer single-core laptop that cost me about $300 in 2010. It still "works" but it's achingly slow doing most things, and tends to waste a lot of my time swapping things in and out of disk cache. It's certainly a lot less powerful than my Passport. So I think it's time to replace it.

My needs are modest. Mostly I do word processing, email, simple browsing, and so on. In fact, the most processor-intensive things I do on the computer may be installing OS leaks and running BlackBerry Link. I occasionally do some basic audio and video editing to produce YouTube videos, but it's not like I'm running a studio.

I don't want to spend a lot of money on this. What do you suggest?

How's $450? I decided to sell my hp envy 6, it has an upgraded video card, 8 gigs of ram, 750 gig hard drive, there are listings on ebay for $550 with only 6 gigs of ram and no video card upgrade

It's not bad, but I've just discovered I can get a pretty good deal on one of our campus refurbished Lenovo machines, and I think I'll go with that, for the convenience of the deal. Thanks for the offer!

Dell has some cheap $299 laptops for sale that are good for light use. They are probably even cheaper in the US. The 15" base inspiron models that have a dual core celeron processor, sounds kinda lame but is actually quite good at everyday tasks.
