My friend is the type of person who sees somebody using a cool device and spends thousands on buying it and then regrets it months later.

Example: bought a Xbox 360 because he saw somebody playing it, doesn't even touch it anymore.

Bought a S3 because his friend also had it then bought a Z10 because I have it(both in the same year)

And now he wants the 5S because his brother has it.

Obviously this is his personal choice and it isn't my money that he's wasting so it doesn't really matter.

No I'm not going to stop him, I just want to see what I could say to stop him

Doesn't sound like you can. Even if you could it sounds like he will be jumping on the next shiny object to come along.
