Haven't been using the free Wi-Fi lately in public places but I did give it a go at my local Tim Horton's today and realized it was very limiting now...no IM, wifi calling, or video (understandable) just email and web surfing. Is it just port blocking? Any way to get around it? I do like my wifi calling.

You know what they say Johnny....

Free is limited and beggars can't be choosers.

The best way to bypass all that? Buy a Tim Horton top, pretend to be staff and get a staff pass code for the staff WI-FI. Finito!

Hopefully you are using a VPN when connected to 'free' WiFi...

I live in the US, so no Tim's here... I have used the 'free' public WiFi often and have not experienced limitations here... From Hotels to libraries to Walmart and even the gas stations on board... I have no issues with WFC functionality, videos, IMs or any of that with exception of the speeds being noticeably slow... That is the only glaring limitation I've encountered here...

I have some friends who DON'T use a VPN or proxy funneling (unwise, but most people truly don't care about privacy and security as long as they can FaceBook and Snapchat) and they have encountered on a few occasions issues with certain websites having banned that particular location's IP address (Craigslist and stuff like that usually), but nothing as far as blocking content like you've outlined...
