Two years ago today I sat in my child's school and watched this...

At the same time the events at Sandy Hook Elementary began to unfold. To this day I still feel selfish for having the privilege of witnessing my child's Christmas Pageant, while teachers and support staff of Sandy Hook sheltered their students, while first responders scrambled to the local school yard, and while parents prayed that their children were safe.

Two years later little has changed. The debate that ensued between gun rights and gun-control forces hardened the lines on each side and led to a higher intensity of opinion on both sides. Eventually, Americans threw up their hands, shrugged their shoulders said Oh, well, once more passively accepting the carnage.

The only thing that has changed in the last two years is anxiety, depression, guilt, sleeplessness, marital strife, drug and alcohol abuse .... these are some of the mental health issues facing residents in Newtown, Connecticut, two years after the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre.

Only now is the scope of the psychological damage to children, parents and others becoming clear, and the need for treatment is likely to persist a long time.

On December 14, 2012, twenty children (all around the age of my youngest child) and six adults were killed but they did not die in vain. "I promise to join other parents to encourage and support sensible solutions that help prevent gun violence in our communities and in our country".

Today and always my thoughts are with the families of the victims of Sandy Hook Elementary.

    Hold your children tight!!
