are there any US banks that offer holding in various currencies? (in Japan this is by default - due to historically very low interest rates for the JPY Yen)

* what are other options (eg opening a bank account in that country.. too high of a maintenance)

* or what online service let people do this?

I noticed that PayPal has such currency option but it has a ridiculously high conversion rate (fee) - 2.5% loss on any transaction

Some of the larger national banks here can do that such as Bank of America, TD Bank, and HSBC to name a couple.
