If you need me to upgrade to 10.0 to see if it'll let me downgrade back to a 2.0 beta I can check that. I had assumed that wouldn't work so I didn't try it when I was on 10.0.

Downgrading to a rootable OS doesn't seem to be any more possible from BB10 than from an official 2.0.

Yeah there's a way to reset it to 1.0.0 but it is too dangerous for me to attempt. I need my Playbook for a project I'm working on.

Basically you need to corrupt the filesystem using cfp so that it believes it has to do a factory refresh. Then it will be at 1.0.0 and will attempt to do an activation again. Then you can use the 'new playbook trick' using resetqnxosregion to get a rooted playbook.
Someone has reported success with this.

There are other methods I could explore if I didn't want to risk bricking.
For example: after upgrade to 10.x on Playbook, can downgrade again?

I've just got a Playbook and comprehensive cover if it bricked. hence, I'd be interested in assisting. am about to try the 1st time boot root method!

after reading about the benefits of rooting my pb I decided not to bother. nevertheless, i'd still try the "too dangerous" method in thd interests of… well, interest!
