Ice Cream Sandwich?
Hi, I'm somewhat disappointed with my playbook as the android player doesn't play nice with way too many apps. Therefore I'm interested in getting android running on my tablet.
I've seen a few videos of Ice Cream Sandwich launcher running in the QNX and I was wondering if the Ice Cream Sandwich launcher is the real deal or just a different skin of the current android player with the same limitation or is it really a full featured version of android running on top of the QNX? Will I be able to run apps trough the launcher that currently aren't running once converted to bar in the android player?
Also is there a solution available where android becomes the sole OS of the tablet (no more QNX) ? If so how are they working? Buggy, normal of flawlessly?
I just can't stand the current QNX, it's a good OS but far too limited for my actual needs. I need a real full featured email client, some real syncing options for contacts and calendar and a Kindle Apps that does not crash once a day requiring the reboot of the tablet if you need to perform any other task that are related to the android player.
Thanks - 04-26-2012, 02:56 PM #2

The only Android OS you are going to have is the Android player. I'm probably wrong, but someday you may be able to put a differ OS on it.Hi, I'm somewhat disappointed with my playbook as the android player doesn't play nice with way too many apps. I think this has already been answered. Yes you would be able to run any app you wanted if you had a full Android OS... But that's not an option... You only get the player... You can convert apps to run in the player... but many crash or just don't work... that is if you're sideloading them...I've seen a few videos of Ice Cream Sandwich launcher running in the QNX and I was wondering if the Ice Cream Sandwich launcher is the real deal or just a different skin of the current android player with the same limitation or is it really a full featured version of android running on top of the QNX? No... Doubt there ever will be due to how the playbook is designed. But could be proved wrong. Also is there a solution available where android becomes the sole OS of the tablet (no more QNX) ? If so how are they working? Buggy, normal of flawlessly?
Yeah sounds good to me too. Hopefully they are able to root the current OS version soon. Then you'll at least have the Android marketplace and apps will run smoother. Until then... hmmmmm.... maybe buy the new 7 inch Samsung for $250... http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Galaxy...5110456&sr=8-1. As the master boot loader is not hackable ( different from Dingleberry ) and in all likelyhood never will be.... it impossible to put another OS on the Playbook..... You also need a group like cyomodgen to hack the ICS as well...... good luck with that......
Even rooted the compatability is still limited.... WIll give you permissions for Android Market, Hulu etc... but with all the hassles doing this why bother.....
For those who find Android so necessary to their needs.... why do you not just sell your playbook and get an Android tab????? RIM has never said the Playbook would be 100 percent compatable with Android or even close...... They actually went out of their way to make this point.... Sounds like buyers remorse for those who did not do their homework.......Last edited by dbmalloy; 04-26-2012 at 03:25 PM.

Thanks to everyone for the answers
As a matter of fact it's no buyer remorse as I got the playbook free from RIM from a developer promo. I'm simply disappointed because I was expecting something more pro from RIM as their corporate business have always been there stronghold.
As I said no buyer's remorse, simply sad to have a nice piece of hardware that is not used anyway near it's real potential. I considered selling it and get a real Android Tab but the 16gb playbook resell value (at least in canada at 100$) doesn't get you any real android tablet and not even an e-ink kindle...
