Stolen credit card
I just got a call from American Express asking me about charges on my account. One is from newegg.com which I have never been to let alone heard about.
Only 3 unusual places I purchased from---Zinio, Playbook video store, and my daughter's new college book store. Ugh! I do love American Express though they caught it on I think the first fraudulent charge and is overnighting me a new card. Next step is to scan all of my home computers just in case.
Anybody else have this experience? I am so tired of people trying to get something for nothing.
I put this under apps because it may have been thru an app that my card was compromised. - 04-11-2012, 07:01 AM #2
When, in an app, would you have been entering your Credit Card information? Your payment info is saved within your BBID and their API is supposed to be used for any purchases.
More likely what happened was a company that you bought something from got broken into, and your credit card number got taken. It's happened to me before.
Use paypal.

I have not heard of either Zinio or the Playbook video store having any issues (and I use both). You would think a college book store would also be secure enough to purchase from. It could be something innocuous like a restaurant or the like as well, it is unfortunate that people will try to take from you. I hope you can get it sorted out.
PS. You have never heard of Newegg? Newegg.com - Computer Parts, Laptops, Electronics, HDTVs, Digital Cameras and More! great deals of computers/parts/electronics

newegg is pretty popular, there is even a newegg playbook app

Sorry about your issuse. Have you used it at a Gas Station lately? I find that a lot of no name gas stations have an attendant who is hired, stays for a week and while there usually working night shift, collects cards, pins etc.. and then quits, after getting what they want. They usually make fake cards with your and many others info, use about 500 bucks and then move on.
Only thing is, they should be able to nail the person that used your card as they have to ship newegg stuff somewhere?Blackberry Torch 2 9810

For what it's worth...
I keep one CC with a small limit of 500 bucks just for internet purchases. It has a low interest rate and I keep it near the max limit all the time. Anyone trying to use it for purchases will find them refused as they will exceed it's limit. When I want something I free up some room and then max it again. Costs me about 4 bucks a month in interest which is reasonable for the peace of mind it affords. - 04-11-2012, 10:09 AM #10

On the bright side out of all this, you have now learned about newegg.com

I think it's use the card often and pay it off monthly.
I've read that maxing out a credit card or keeping it with a high balance will ding your credit. For example, $400 on a $500 limit credit card will ding your credit whereas $400 on a $8000 limit credit card will help you. - 04-11-2012, 02:00 PM #16
My credit card number was stolen at a gas pump. It was actually my bank card # and was a big mess that took months to straighten up.
Are you sure it was from using it online? - 04-11-2012, 02:14 PM #17

Unfortunately we have been through this before. Once I lost the physical card, once my husband's card was ghosted and now this. My charges are all pretty much to the same places. Same gas, groceries, etc. Boring house stuff I charge to build up miles for concert tickets. Only ones out of normal lately for this card has been the things mentioned. Luckily, newegg didn't lose out. American Express figured it out very quickly. Quite impressed.
Ironic thing is I just called American Express yesterday to let hem know we were heading out of the country on vacation. Hence the reason I was buying videos and magazines to bring with me.
Oh well. I may look into a prepaid card or another one with a small limit. - 04-12-2012, 04:40 AM #20
Never happened, but I will pay more attention to such issue!

Orderly payment of debt. i.e. make minimum payments, keeps the bank happy.
No point in having it at 1/3 of it's limit in my situation as that's a LOT of room to exploit and serves no purpose.
Anyhow I'm sure most of us already have good credit and it's not really the point. Security of your money in online transactions is the issue. - 04-12-2012, 02:31 PM #23
Got that same call from Am Ex - today. Some rather large charge to an Austrialian co.
Gotta love AmEx!
Didnt charge at any of the places the OP mentioned - must be that theft of a few months ago one poster mentioned - maybe the crooks were working em from AtoZ and are just getting to some of us...although I did download the Zinio app yesterday, interestingLast edited by ratz; 04-12-2012 at 02:37 PM.
