We're excited to announce yet another major release of Files & Folders. Version 2.5 adds the most advanced ZIP support available on PlayBook:
manage your zip files as if they were regular folders
tap to open, then cut, copy, paste files into and out of zips
rename, delete, arrange files and folders inside zips
it doesn't matter whether your files (zips, pasted, copied files) are on your PlayBook or on Dropbox or Google Docs - paste a local folder directly into a Dropbox zip, or open a zip on Google and paste a file to your PlayBook!
view thumbnails, previews, text without unzipping
single tap zip/unzip of files or folders
We've also added
a plain text viewer
support for embedded EXIF image thumbnails
improved memory management for images
Available now with free trial version on App World!

No, encryption is not currently supported. We are working on a native implementation in which encryption support is planned (among other things). But that will not be part of the coming update.
Please note that this is an old thread - we've released 2.6, 2.7 and 3.0 since then.
The problem is in the viewing of files that have a Unicode byte-order mark (BOM) at the start of the file but are not correctly Unicode encoded. A work-around could be to open the file in a text editor on your PC and save it as either a plain text file (without BOM) or a Unicode file (with BOM).
In the next version of F&F we've implemented a better automatic detection algorithm and a feature to override automatic detection and choose between plain text, UTF8 and UTF16.
