Emulators and Emulator News for the Blackberry Playbook
This is an attempt at a localized list for playbook emulators, instead of other threads getting stuffed with "where is x emulator?"
I am sure I have missed some, and have missed credit somewhere. Please feel free to correct me and add to this list, and I will update the main post.
This thread can also be used to release information about your own emulators. Please PM me or post on here for requests to be added to the main post!

The Emulator Refresh Project
Froggyface has been kind enough to give me developer access to his Github projects.
My goals are very simple:
- Add the visual ROM selector you see in snes9x-pb and pcsx-reARMed-pb
- Ensure all emulators have the ability to do at least one savestate per game.
- Possibly remove the splashscreen graphics, to avoid ghosting across other apps.
- Implement customizable controls.

Emulator Frequently Asked Questions [FAQ]
1. Where do I get games?
Google is your friend. Typing in the game system name + ROM will do the trick.
2. Where do I put my ROMS?
Snes9x-pb: misc/snes9x-pb/roms
Froggyface emulators: misc/rom/name (in the readme)
3. How do I get to those folders?
Easiest way is to enable wireless filesharing on your Playbook. See here: http://crackberry.com/wi-fi-file-sha...berry-playbook
4. Why is porting a simple emulator taking so long?
Emulators are not simple. Porting is not simple. In a lot of cases, we have to rewrite how certain functions of the emulator work. We all work full time jobs and do this in our spare time.
5. Can we get a NintendoDS/PS2/Insert nextgen system here emulator?
Realistically, these may not work well. We have difficulties getting a Gameboy Advance up to full speed and sound. If they do come, they will be the last to do so.
6. Do I need to be rooted to use emulators?
No, you do not. You can install them with DDPB (You must enable developer mode on your Playbook.) http://www.berryreview.com/forums/to...staller-method
7. [Insert emulator feature] is problematic!
Please post in the appropriate Emulator topic, listed above.
8. I want to beta test!
When/if we need them, we will ask for them. We know lots of you would love to help!
9. Why is there no GUI or ROM Selector?
We are waiting for a GUI library from RIM, called Cascades, to be released.
- If anyone else has something to add, please PM me it and I will put it on the FAQ list.
This area will list the requests by the general public, to avoid duplicates.
Requests:
- Amiga Emulator
- NeoGeo Emulator
- MAME Emulator
- Commodore64 Emulator
- TN3270 Emulator
- NintendoDS Emulator (This is aiming a little high, as we are attempting to get other lesser emulators running smoothly.)
Global Feature Requests:
- Bluetooth Controller: This may not be viable at the moment, as it needs root to realistically work right now. Can optimize the emulators for the bb keyboard, but bluetooth controllers may not be viable until we see an official RIM implementation.Last edited by jtokarchuk; 08-02-2012 at 08:42 PM. Not trying to sound ungrateful (believe me, I think it's awesome you guys are working on these apps and I'm happy just knowing it's in progress), but I'm just wondering. I assume this is a full build from the original, and not some kind of extremely complicated Android build?
Again, thanks so much for your hard work (A7omic, jtokarchuk, froggyface, and everyone else contributing), having emulators on the playbook adds so much to the value and how much time I can waste on it. :P I can't even tell you how great it is to use the playbook as a portable version of the super nintendo to rock super mario world anywhere I want but then again, I bet you guys love it too! Thanks so much. Anyway, I'm not exactly a coder but, if there's anything I can do to help with this project I'd be happy too. - 03-01-2012, 04:13 PM

Another vote for an Amiga emulator. One is on android. How well would the emulated Amiga run while being emulated on a PlayBook that was emulating android?

Any chance on getting a bluetooth controller working with any of the emulators? Imagin plugging in your playbook into your tv via HDMI and having all your emulators and being able play through a controller. Playbook turns into the ulimate game console.

MAME on Playbook?
Any chances that someone is working on MAME for Blackberry Playbook? mamedev.org Would be awesome, I use MAME on my Windows machine and have tons of ROMS of retro games to play. Imagine MAME on Playbook, definitely the hardware is up to the task and with the right controls it would be very cool. Plus the source for MAME looks to be open so it could be ported, I'm sure.

I've sent an email to the developers of the MAME emulator. Letting them know about how easy it is to develop for the PlayBook. And I let them know of the free PlayBook offer RIM has. You might peak their interest if you sen them an email. I suggest sending them links to RIM's dev sites and things like that instead of just begging for an app. But I really want to see more and more app come to the PlayBook that show how much muscle it has

The free PlayBook offer ends tomorrow at midnight (when its turning to March 3). Also, RIM doesn't seem to be allowing emulators on App World. If we see a MAME emulator, it will almost certainly be from one of the extremely skilled developers that have already created emulators, as there's not much incentive for the original MAME developers.
It's important to be patient, a tonne of time and effort goes into these emulators and it's really lucky we've got developers doing the massive favor of porting said emulators and distributing them for free. Ultimately it's all up to them with what they choose to do with their time and we have to respect the fact they've already put in a tonne of work for us.
