Dev Request for simple Camera app
OK I say simple in that it would only have 1 feature so I assume it is "simple"
Take a photo with the native camera and be prompted for a name before you save.
Yes there are full featured apps that let you do this but what I think would be nice is to save a name with the photo so it is easy to find. One big gripe I have with the native file manager, such as when you attach to an email or edit a photo - you have to scroll through a long list to find it. The Search feature works great but with the native img_012892992.jpg title who knows what the name is. And if you just took the shot you can bet it is at the bottom of the list - lots of scrolling. So what do you think Devs?
Keep it simple, shoot, name and save.
What might be nice is the default name shows in a text box
If you click save it saves as is
If you click the X at the right of the text box it clears the default name and opens the keyboard for you to input the name - beach1 beach 2 etc. - the software would add the .jpg to keep it simple. - 07-12-2012, 12:56 PM #4
There are a few workarounds that will allow you to do what you want, sort of. To attach a single pic to an email, first, install Ghost Commander, an android file manager in App World. Then, open Ghost and navigate to your Camera folder (or any folder where the pic you want to send is). Once in the proper folder, find the pic you want to send (if the thumbnails are too small, you can change their size in settings). You can use the toolbar at the bottom (which slides right and left for more options) to arrange the files by name, date, size etc if you like. Once you've found the pic, tap and hold on it. A dialogue will pop up- choose "Send to". Another dialogue will pop up, choose "Messages". Your Messages app will then open in the compose view with the pic already attached. I haven't figured out a way, yet, to send multiple pics this way, but another android file manager, ES File Explorer, which needs to be sideloaded, will allow you to do this- in a similar fashion to the way Ghost does it. There are other workarounds, but these are probably the easiest that I know of.

Yes you can do this with a native app called Files and Folders as well. I was looking for something with a few less steps. With my suggestion - you use the camera to take a photo and email to send the photo for instance.
Beyond email - is when you use a photo editor for instance - same problem.
Thank you very much for offering a suggestion - I don't mean to sound ungrateful for your responseLast edited by BKillar; 07-12-2012 at 03:24 PM.

Yes, the absolutely abysmal file manger is not solely limited to emailing a photo. Trying to pick a photo for editing or anything else is awful. Even the photo app is poor as it does not show the file's name or other properties, nor does it allow you to rename it, there and then. On my bbphone before I attach one, I can alter its size. A mere PHONE does this and much more and rim's tablet canNOT!!!!!! And there has not been one hint that this will be rectified in bb10 or bb20 or bb50.
(yes, I admit, one of my pet peeves and when it comes up, I jump into the thread wholeheartedly!!!) - 07-12-2012, 05:17 PM #8
The HP Touchpad has the capability to arrange screen shots into folders which you can name. This would be useful for me with the PB.

It may seem involved, but actually it's not. Once you open Ghost Commander, you can be in the camera folder immediately, depending on the state that you last left it in (and never more than 2 taps away if you set favorites up correctly). Then 3 more taps (okay, one is a tap and hold) and you've opened Messages in the compose view with your pic already attached. Thats three taps total needed, with the possibility of a maximum 5 taps. If you use the Messages app, to attach a pic to an email, you first need to tap to open compose view, them tap the paper clip to select an attachment, then tap on "pictures" to bring up the thumbnails, then find and tap on the pic you want to attach, then click "attach", and only then is your pic attached. That's 5 taps total. Like I said, in Ghost you can do this in 3 (with a maximum of 5), no more, and probably less than using Messages.
I also know Files and Folders can do this, but it is definitely more involved and I don't believe it uses the native messages app to send your emails.
As far as taking a pic within an app and then sending it, there is a way to do this that I know of but you'll need to be running OS 2.1 beta to do it. - 07-13-2012, 10:25 AM

Thanks for creating this thread. We will be including this feature in the next update of Über Iris. Never knew this was such a big pain point.

We have created a prototype of a camera app that fulfils the OPs request. We're deciding what additional features to put in for purchase. However, the ability to save a picture of a desired name will be free. Stay tuned!

Uber Iris
That would be a great addition. I suppose adding a better file manager is a much more involved task? The native one is the heart of the problem. In Uber when you wish to select a photo from the Gallery you are presented with the stock manger which requires scrolling through the entire pile, no way to select individual folders. Thanks for listening

Features
Like most things it would be nice to keep it clean and simple.
- the default would allow you to simply save without renaming
- if there was a clever way to create a unique name without having to type, I like the way my Bold saves photos with the geo tag for instance, this creates a unique name without my input. So maybe you press the geotag button and get a unique name based on location?
- Maybe something like you save the first photo "title" you are taking at a birthday party as momsbirthday, and the default names for the following photos would be momsbirthday-01, -02 etc. Until of course you input a new "title". That would be nice on a variety of digital photo devices. We have the same problem with our digital cameras after all
- If you could create a folder to save to with a unique name that you create on the first photo of a series and the photos would be saved as the folder name - 01, 02 etc. This would allow you to organize the photos into a folder as you take them and create unique names as you do all by simply creation of a folder for the event you are capturing photos for. Folder "Disney 2012" - photo names - "Disney 2012-01.jpg" etc.
- Of course saving to a social website is always nice - save and post. And if you could do Instagram it would be a bonus (just saying lots of folks looking for a PB solution to Instagram)
- It would allow the same features when you select video rather than camera?
I am sure I will think of some others but I guess the idea is reduce the effort of the user by looking for a clever way to avoid typing in the name each time. Not necessary but just some ideas. Like I said this is an issue with my digital camera too..... piles of long photo names that are useless (with exception of the date maybe)
I assume the native camera resolution and zoom etc would be preserved in this app?
I look forward to tying this app! - 07-20-2012, 11:28 AM #19
Photo management is a nontrivial problem. In fact, data management in general is nontrivial. That's why many applications now resort to using a database with tags and free the user from having to know the name of the image.
The level of sophistication described above will result in an app that is not going to be free from us.
We do not plan on supporting video recording at the moment. We would want to first nail down the details for pictures. The camera api for Native Development is still rather new and some things are not entirely clear. However, we foresee that the issues we have encountered could be addressed. The PB geolocation service is somewhat unreliable and so using geo info as part of the file name might pose a problem.Sucroid - Sweet Apps for the Fans - 07-20-2012, 11:57 AM #20

I asked with one of the best blackberry app developers to design an app which have such features enabled. But still I they care not able to create such apps.

I have a camera app in the works (99cent). Consider this added. Ill get a trial with it and trial ver will allow this functionality indefinitely for free. Just advanced features will lock out.
