Thank you, SoUnCool. Orientation change requires re-pagination of the currently loaded file and depends on how big is the file.
Definitely I'd like to add support for PDF because current Adobe Reader is virtually unusable, but without access to the RIM's NDK and 3rd party C/C++ libraries it would be very challenging.

Hi Igor;
Thanks for the fast reply. My books would seem to be formatted in Word 1997-2003, so the old .DOC tag. Even PDF support would be great, as Calibre doesn't read Word either, so it becomes having to convert .doc to PDF to Epub, then export... quite a chore when you have a few to do.
Keep up the great work. The one book I did stick in your reader was working perfectly.

Forgive me if I'm missing something, but isn't there a 'search within text' function in Book Reader?
In a meeting today, a quote within a reference book was paraphrased. One of my associates happened to have the book on her device (I don't know what device because she was sitting across the room but I'm guessing it was an iPad) and almost immediately pulled up the exact quote. I have the book on my PB and was totally at a loss. This doesn't make the PB look like a viable device for any kind of research.
If the search function doesn't exist, is there an ePub reader that has this feature? Does the SVIT reader have it? What's up with that?

Hi Dave,
I'll take a look at the binary Word format, but there is a reason why Calibre could not support it today - MS does not provide a complete format description. BTW, I think Calibre Documentation recommends slightly different conversion workflow for Word documents - Word->Save As->Filtered HTML->Calibre->EPUB

I bought the SVIT reader ($0.99) and it DOES have a search function that works. But when it comes to opening a large ePub (The Brothers Karamazov), Book Reader opens it almost instantly while SVIT couldn't even open it.

So, I guess that I need both readers. Sure wish it was only one. - 09-27-2011, 10:55 PM #56
Hi,
Technically speaking, implementing the search function is not a big deal, but I need to figure out what would be the best way to navigate between search results without messing too much with existing pagination and rendering engines. I have a couple of items with higher priority then search, but I should be able to add it in a couple of weeks.

New release 1.1.3 just got approved in the App World and should be available for download on Wednesday. It implements support for FB2 and text (with TXT extension) files.
I'm planning to fix a couple of outstanding issues with handling Kindle books (performance on big files, header fonts and missing ToC) . Afterwards I was going to add support for CHM files, but I'd like to check with you guys if there is any interest in this or other formats that Book reader does not support yet?
Thanks,
Igor

I just wanted to thankyou, you obviously believe in your product, I am dyslectic, word blind, which by placing coloured filters over the page enables folk like myself to read and absorb the text. I haven't as yet purchased my playbook as waiting for the OS update but this kind of development makes my choice easy. With the ability to change background and font colour it may open up a better reading experience, so can't wait

Hey Igor:
Any chance of a "scrolling view" where the page scrolls up the screen at a speed that the person reading can set. It's something that used to work great on mobireader on my palm device and i loved it. Great job on this app. It's the best out there and your support and desire to make it perfect is fantastic. Thank you. - 09-28-2011, 08:34 PM #63
Thank you, tonyshep. It's definitely doable and relatively easy to implement, but I could not promise that I'll do it in a couple of next releases. I already have planned/promised a lot of new functionality and don't have enough time to work on it.

kindle books
ive only been able to add free books but neither purchased nor loaned books will work. is there a work around?
thanks. - 09-29-2011, 11:21 PM #70
Not at the moment, sorry.
It's because of the DRM encryption those books are using. In order to solve it for EPUBs, I would need access to RIM's NDK, which is still in private beta. I've applied for the access to the beta version of NDK and my request was denied because RIM is only interested to share it with game developers at this stage (at least that was official explanation). I guess RIM is happy with current implementations of Adobe and Kobo readers...
I'll see what I could do after RIM will release it to the public, but today none of the readers available on the PlayBook are not able to open DRM-protected books.
Situation with Kindle DRM is even worse, I could not find out any legal way for 3rd party application to open those books purchased from the Amazon that are protected by their DRM. Of course there are tools out there that remove this protection, but I'm not planning to use them for obvious reasons.

I purchased Book Reader last night and I have to say it's working really well for me. Loads my epub books very fast. I love the page turn animation and customizable font size/type it offers. Good to see the developer is active here and responds to concerns quickly. Keep up the good work.

This is probably a stupid question, but bear with me. I've just started looking into the world ebooks for some old and classic titles such as what is in Project Gutenberg. Can I presume that this app would read titles from here? That is, if I download an .epub book from this website using the Playbook's browser, will the app load it? Or do I have to download and transfer from my computer?
Also, aside from Project Gutenberg, are there any other sites people can recommend - legal only please.
Oh - and a thank you to the developer. It's very nice to see you communicating with people who have used your apps. Very impressive.
EDIT: I will put this in capital letters on purpose as I do want to shout it: THIS IS EASILY ONE OF THE BEST PURCHASES I HAVE MADE ON THE PLAYBOOK. Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you. Very very pleased.Last edited by Darlaten; 09-30-2011 at 07:29 PM.

Thank you, InfinitiGuy. New release is coming next week. It will significantly improve load and page turning performance for large MOBI books (azw, mobi, prc, pdb). It will also be able to extract and display Table Of Content for those books. Unfortunately, existing books in MOBI format will have to re-imported - had to implement different parsing and optimization algorithm.

Thank you, Darlaten. For free public domain books you could also use Google Books and Feedbooks | Free eBooks for Android & iPhone/iPad. You could also Google for DRM free epubs, which should return you some links to places where you could buy books that you will own without somebody telling you where you are allowed to read your books. Selection is not great, but it's all I could offer at this time.
Here is another summary link I find useful - How To Build An ePub eBook Library For Your iPad « The eBook Test
