It could be worthy to get
- scrolling view option. When reading, it is natural for me trying to scroll with thumbs on the side but, personally, I don't like that page flip. A scroll finger led could be very nice.
- avoid screen brightness dimming during reading. I would like to avoid to change the PB setting every time that I open the reader to avoid screen light dim.
Thanks!
Thanks, it appears that RIM has started to accept more developers into NDK beta program since yesterday and I've got my invite already. :)
Hi,
1) This should not be a problem, I'll see if could add it in the release after the next one
2) Unfortunately, this is out of my control at least for now. API for screen dimming is not public. I'll check if I could do it via additional APIs exposed in NDK.

Igor

Greaat!! So, what's the ETA on pdf support? :D
Just purchased - based in large part on the excellent support demonstrated here.
untangleddev, would you consider adding a brightness slider adjustment? This feature is available on other Playbook epub readers and I find it helpful for my sensitive eyes.
I see that there is no shortage of requests. You are doing a fine job of trying to accommodate.
Hi,
Don't want to give you any false promises on this one. I think I know what I need to do, but it will require to write a different rendering engine. Plus I have a backlog of features that I've already committed to deliver. Hopefully the first version should be ready by the end of the year.

Yeah, I have a quite a list of features that people want to see implemented. Brightness control is already there, but not at the very top of this list, sorry.

Okay, well keep up the good work.
Wow! Book Reader is #1 in the AppWorld's Top Purchased category for PlayBook and #28 for all BlackBerry devices.
Thanks to all of you guys for your support. That is what really motivates me.

I have tried three e-reader applications from BlackBerry AppWorld for the BlackBerry PlayBook and agree that Book Reader is a superior e-pub reader. The first e-reader application I used was EPUB Reader which is good but Book Reader adds a little "je ne sais quoi" which puts at the top in my opinion. With a few more feature enhancements I would definitely pay more for this application which at present is offered at a mere CAD/USD 0.99.
Igor, in my opinion you have earned these excellent ratings in BlackBerry AppWorld. I like your Book Reader application so much that I purchased it for both of my BlackBerry PlayBooks.
Igor, thanks for resolving the issue I had. The support you provide is very much appreciated.
Thank you, BB9700CA. If you to see any additional functionality in the reader. Please don't hesitate to ask for it here or via e-mail. Even if this would be something that someone already asked for, it would help me prioritize my development plan.

No problem at all, it took just 10min to fix it. :)
Now I have to figure out how to do it in a generic way, which could be tricky.

Well, not anymore. :( But 2nd position is also great! :D
you earned this because of great support and great app, Persoanlly i dont care about an app that promise to do dozen of things, but just do one or two of them right, i want one app that is great on doing one core function, your epub reader is awesome!!!
your App is really word class and you deliver on what you promise. Keep it up:)
Thanks Igor for your hard and constant work!
apologies for the newb questions. i am new to ereaders . while i do use the preloaded kobo app on my pb32gb i am totally out of water as far as what works with what reader etc. so for example can i buy and install book reader then go to amazon and dl a kindle book ? if not can i read the kobo books i already have on book reader ? if not where i can dl CURRENT ( not a tale of two cities.....) titles of books in formats that the book reader will recognize ? kobo reader leaves a lot to be desired id like to purchase book reader as my main ebook reader...but not if there is limited content to read.tia.
Hi,
Some books that you could buy from Amazon and Kobo are protected by propitiatory DRM controls and some are not. That really depends on a publisher decision.
Currently Book Reader could open only DRM free books (unencrypted). I doubt that I'll ever be able to add support for Amazon's DRM because they don't disclose any information on on the technology they are using and don't provide any DRM API to any of the 3rd party developers. I believe that situation with EPUBs that Apple sells via iTunes is same.
Now, some good news. Almost all other online bookstores are using Adobe DRM implementation for books in EPUB format and there is a legal way to use it for 3rd party applications. The main problem is the license cost though - it's insanely high and annual, but I'm still trying to find a compromise with them.
Meanwhile, you could try to Google for "DRM free Epubs" and check some bookstores from the result.

igor thanks for the reply.
so one more question- i want to buy a book from fictionwise.com. would i purchase and download epub or mobi format ?
If you have a choice, always select the ePub version of the book. Both
formats are HTML based, but MOBI allows just a limited subset of HTML
features and in my experience its content layout is always messier. I've
just spend 10+ days trying to create a generic ToC extraction
implementation for MOBI books. In MOBI it's a part of the book content and
could be placed anywhere in the book. In ePub, if ToC is present it's always in
a separate well-structured file. Although, format would not matter if
book is converted to ePub from MOBI (I've seen it too often).
