Love to see this as well. I have an architectural drafting business and it would be great if I could pull up a drawing while on site and have a look at it on my PB.
Celebrate we will

Sorry to post an ignorant question, but is this an online Autocad viewer? I don't use or even have autocad on my desktop (it's a Mac anyways), but I have a viewer which allows me to look at and print out drawings.
I would love a viewing app, but will gladly use an online utility with my PB. Could someone please educate me how this works?
TIA. - 12-20-2011, 06:58 AM #8
AutoCad WS
Simply go to Autocadws.com and create an account. There are viewing and editing tools. My comment above was in regard to the fact that it is difficult to navigate the online tool without a keyboard and mouse but it can be done. Take a look.
The apps are of course tailored to make all this easier on a tablet. - 12-20-2011, 09:19 AM #9
I've actually spoken to the Autodesk Beta Team about this and they said Autodesk will not spend any time on RIM stuff because they are thinking RIM will not be around within 2 years and they don't want to waste resources. I even pointed them towards the tool to port thier Droid app to QNX and they still weren't interested. So it isn't going to happen guys. And that is from the folks that would be doing the work. Sorry. Best bet is to hope that the coming Droid player will allow us to use it on our Playbooks.

So your're saying that people should carefully research products to make sure that mission critical apps are already available for the device that they are about to purchase. It is never wise to assume that a relatively new device will be well-stocked with all of your favourite apps. Very good advice lyntarbox. Thank you!
The only thing that I would add is that it is usually very expensive for developers to port their apps to a new OS. I guess that's why RIM has made it so easy for developers to make their Android apps available to PlayBook users. So if one of your favourite apps is currently missing, you owe it to yourself to contact the developer and tell them about the opportunity that RIM provides to increase their customer base (almost for free). - 12-20-2011, 10:39 AM #11
Two things you should know. First Android apps will not be available in App World unless the developer takes the (minimal) trouble to run their app's .apk file through RIM's conversion tool and digitally sign the .bar file that is generated. Secondly, a company that refuses to do the minimal amount of work necessary to accomplish this conversion is not acting in your best interest. Your should not, in any way, hold RIM responsible for the developer's anti-social behaviour.

Thanks BKillar, I guess it's one more incentive to get a bluetooth keyboard/trackpad!
Does an autocad viewer app need to be written by someone from Autodesk? I have used viewers for Mac and Linux OS's that were written by 3rd parties. Damn, I wish I knew more about writing code. - 12-21-2011, 08:55 PM #13
Well aware of the conversion process, that's why I pointed them toward it, hoping they would see a "shortcut" to get their app in front of us.
Yea, I wasn't saying it was RIM's fault. I know where the problem lies. The issue is that Autodesk has bought in to the doom and gloom and feels that RIM will not be around in 2 years, thus they view it as a waste of time.
That's all I was saying. Just relaying the message I got from the horse's mouth.Tim McDougald

I don't care if AutoCAD is on the pb. I think I would dislike using it on a small screen.
I'm fine with using it to view drawings and maybe do some 'field notes' on pages. - 12-30-2011, 10:08 PM

yes i agree with you making PDF is better, and reading the developers response makes me think they are actually full of it, their app is not that useful...the hole usability of this is using it on the go...I'm so mad...this is what monopoly brings to us, ty company's that charge 3k$ for 1 license and say is to expensive keeping their tool out for every ecosystem...they didn't even have a decent mac version till this year and still sucks...

I just converted the .apk to a .bar and installed. The app loads I get a nice little icon but when I run it I get an error message "The application AutoCAD WS (process.com.autodesk.autcadws) has stop unexpectedly. Please try again" guess what? Trying again doesn't help.
Sorry guys I tried, this one may just not be compatible for porting. I'll try some other things but not hopeful.

Would be great for me too. I spend a lot of time in the field. Right now I generate PDFs as do others.
Good luck trying to port the android product. Funny that the iPad has this app available and Apple's OS was reverted to unsupported status some years ago by Autodesk. Don't know if they've regained their status as a supported OS.
