After Android, More Linux Power to Smartphones and Tablets, Ubuntu Next in Line*|*TechLeash

Android, the Linux-based operating system designed for mobile, may be seeing more competition from the Linux camp soon enough. After Tizen, a project formerly known as MeeGo, Ubuntu known for its desktop-based Linux implementation, will soon emerge in the smartphone and tablet market and compete against Android. The official announcement will be made during the Ubuntu Developer Summit, where Canonical, the company behind the OS, will announce its full intentions.

In a recent interview, Mark Shuttleworth, revealed that their short term plans are to make Ubuntu 12.04, the next long term support (LTS) of their Linux distribution, as stable as possible and to give the Unity desktop interface, its final fit and polish for both home and business Linux desktop users. After that, however, Cronical will be expanding its popular Linux desktop to all computing devices.

At this time, in a highly competitive mobile space with Apple and Google leading in first positions, Research in Motion and Microsoft playing catch up, its hard to see where Ubuntu may fit in. However, Shuttleworth denies this seemingly valid truth: The device world is highly competitive and highly dynamic, while Android and iOS dominate handheld devices, disruptive elements could still establish themselves.

Prototype devices may not hit until next year, and a final release may not happen until 2014, according to Shuttleworth. The reason behind this delayed launch is that the company wants to get things right with the OS and UI.

With Google acquiring Motorola Mobility and potentially competing as well in the hardware space against traditional Android licensees, Ubuntu may offer hardware-makers a way to compete and distinguish themselves.

a good read, but i think by 2014 it`ll be too late to enter the market. that said there are quite a following of linux users for pc`s so it `could` work well, but then that was the whole theory behind the playbook.....
