I kind of like the looks of the thunder, but not enough to leave my BB9700

They seem like great devices but something tells me that they may flop. I hope that I'm wrong though. The lightning looks awesome. I love that form fctor, but RIM has done me a favor again by creating its own slider. I will be picking that device up when it becomes available for my carrier.

I see some problems...
The smoke looks like a Pre form factor and look almost (but more boxy), but isn't going to resonate as "familiar" to anyone with qwerty phones, because it's too different... 2.8" qvga and very skinny, I just can't see that keyboard being very big at all... It looks like they tried to merge a candybar dumphone with a qwerty smartphone without a slider...
The flash looks like practically every HTC phone released, minus the well known name in smartphones (marketing is going to kill Dell).
The Lightning has a chance because it's a new platform anyways, where it's not facing well-known and already established competition.
But overall, these designs are so generic. It's like they stole a mold from HTC and had to quickly make 4 variations for their own phones...

However, I don't see any smartphone manufacturer coming out with amything that looks too different from what we have already seen. I echo you comments about the competition being fierce from more well known smartphone manufacturers. Why would I get a Dell smartphone, when I can get an HTC smartphone with the same platform and specs. Right now, there is nothing separating the Dell from everyone else. But like I said earlier, there isn't a lot of room for them to provide different hardware from the competition.

Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com | RIM is definitely trying some different styles (9800, clamshell, pearl 3g, etc). People's complaints are generally software related for them.
They could easily do something like the standard qwerty layout or a portrait slider. But the reason they don't want to is they don't want to take any risks or have to deal with different display sizes...
Much easier to just sell what everyone else is already making. As already stated though, that puts them on even ground with manufacturers like HTC which are better known...

It seems that smartphone manufacturers are just producing touchscreen and slider devices. What happened to the straight up front facing qwerty keyboard like most BlackBerry smartphones? I would love to see more devices coming out that have the same form factor as my Tour. Outside of BlackBerry and Nokia devices, all of the phones that share the Tour's form factor are cheap. I would like to see more high end devices like my Tour coming from the big manufacturers.

Palm, Motorola, etc. | I know. Its a shame. Maybe I'm being stubborn. Maybe I should be getting on the bandwagon like everyone else. Problem is I have had a lot of the big name touchscreen and slider devices and the user experience hasn't been anywhere near what my BB brings. I know that my BB in comparison may have dated software and hardware, but I enjoy it so much and it works so well for me. I just want to know that there will be similar devices to what I have and like coming in the future. I like BBs, but I don't want to be limited to just them when making a smartphone purchase in the future.

Has anyone heard any news on the Dell Lightning? I'm hoping for a Christmas-present-to-me....

If Dell wants a prayer in this game they need to step up their marketing, the Streak, which in theory looked boss, has come and gone without any notice already.

Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com | Agreed.
The tour form factor is really the most efficient.
My perfect phone
Bold 9000 form factor
touchscreen
QnX operating system
specs upped to run the device smoothly.
