Question What's the best deal for a prepaid BlackBerry?

Hello,

I am wondering what the CrackBerry nation considers to be the best prepaid BlackBerry plan? I know for a fact that Virgin and Boost offer a prepaid BlackBerry plan, but I am wondering if any GSM carriers in the U.S. offer a prepaid service? Also if a GSM carrier does offer prepaid BlackBerrys could I buy any GSM Berry and put a prepaid SIM in the phone?

Currently I have a 9650 with Sprint. I know Virgin has the 8530, but I want a higher-end Berry. I was kind of hoping to find a 9780, get a prepaid SIM, and be rocking when my contract expires.

Any input?

I was just browsing T-Mobile's website. I couldn't find anything about a prepaid Berry. I'm thinking I will send an e-mail and see if I can get a response. Prepaid wold be cheaper than what I am paying now, but I wouldn't go that route if I couldn't get at least the equivalent to a 9650.

If i could use an unlocked BlackBerry I would jump on T-Mobile in a second.

I have a prepaid plan on Tmo. You get a flex pay account, and add on the BlackBerry services. I have 500 anytime minutes, unlimited nights/weekends, unlimited SMS, and unlimited BlackBerry data for approximately $70/mnth (tax included)

Michelle, will T-Mobile allow any unlocked GSM device on its network?

Well, I don't know about ANY GSM device... I can only speak for BlackBerry because that's what I've used. I've had an unlocked AT&T Bold 9000, Rogers Bold 9700, and AT&T Torch 9800 all on Tmo, so I'm guessing they aren't too picky.

Of course what sucks about Tmo is they use different 3G than AT&T and Rogers, so if you use a device from those carriers, you are stuck on EDGE with no 3G.

Thanks for all the info. I'm going to check into it in the next month or so. My contract isn't up for a few more months and I figure now is the best time to shop around. Thanks again!

Michelle, what kind of technology does T-Mobile use for 3G? I am curious because I have this 9650 and it does support GSM networks. Maybe I should just unlock this phone and bail when my contract expires.

Yes, you can unlock your device and use it on T-Mobile.
But you'll only get EDGE, not 3G.

T-Mobile uses AWS for their 3G (1700Mhz) in other words, any GSM device you put on T-Mobile will NOT get 3G.. only EDGE. Unless of course it has the 1700Mhz band, which no other carrier in the US uses.

Tmo uses 1700mHz / AWS, which no other carrier in the US uses. That's why you can unlock a GSM device from a different carrier and use it on the network, but you won't get 3G. Everything still works, I switch back and forth between Tmo devices and AT&T, but you're stuck on EDGE. Yeah, it sucks sometimes to not have 3G, but it is what it is.

AT&T and Rogers use the same bands, so if you get a Rogers device and unlock it and use it on AT&T, you'll still be able to use 3G (and vice versa).

I hope that makes sense.
