Pre or Pixi????
Which 1?? Help me decide
- 09-18-2009, 09:46 AM #2
Well, there's still a bit that's unknown about the Pixi, specification-wise. I've been looking at both of them, too....you might best be served by visiting CB's sister site, PreCentral to get the best info.
From what it looks like so far, though, I'm thinking that if you prefer candy-bar style phones and can live with a slightly slower processor, a bit less RAM (still has roughly 7GB of ROM storage, though!), and a smaller display, then the Pixi might be the one to watch. I'm still not totally sold on the slider aspect of the Pre. - 09-18-2009, 09:55 AM #3

Ooooh, well, okay...I had momentarily forgotten about that piece of Preware goodness!
Have you used it, and if so, does it work pretty well? I was reading a bit about it at PreCentral yesterday. I've never been big on touch screens, but the Pre's keyboard felt odd to me and would actually push me in the direction of using the onscreen keyboard.
To the original poster, I've got to say that as I weigh my future phone options, I'm kinda leaning toward the Pre when it comes to Palm's devices...especially with this reminder about the onscreen keyboard.
I don't think I'd make a definitive decision until I was actually able to try them both out in a store, side-by-side...but that's me -- I analyze things to death sometimes!
The problem with doing that is...well, firstly, we don't know when a "Pre 2" is coming. And if you adopt that "wait for the sequel" attitude, there's always going to be something newer on the horizon.Last edited by CNYBlackBerryAddict; 09-18-2009 at 10:14 AM.

I think its great, and I use it on a regular basis. I don't have issues with it lagging or anything. I also use the slide out keyboard, and I would say I still use the slide out keyboard more, but the onscreen one is a great option to have. It also works in landscape mode so you don't have to open the physical keyboard while surfing the web

Sweet! I'm definitely going to keep doing my research, re: the Pre, then. It may be the phone I jump to when it comes upgrade time.

It looks like the Pixi will be a viable option for people looking at a lower price point and who are willing to forego a slightly more powerful phone. - 09-18-2009, 12:13 PM #8
I think at some point Palm will have an official on screen keyboard for the Pre. I don't really see why they wouldn't when the capability is obviously there.
I think the Pixi is a great option for people who want a Pre, but can't really afford it. While there are some downgraded aspects, that doesn't make the Pixi any less of a phone, and if it runs like the Pre, it will be a great device. A lot of people also complain about lack of Wifi..... i NEVER use the wifi on my Pre because there is 1) never a need to, and 2) don't get wifi everywhere (as opposed to Evdo which I get everywhere).

Oh, I don't doubt it'll still be a solid phone, and I think it's great that Palm's introducing a model that might appeal to people on tighter budgets or who just simply prefer candybar-style phones. I think a lot of phone manufacturers are realizing that, especially in these tighter economic times, people want to remain connected, but don't always need the higher-end items (i.e., RIM's move to bring about the 85xx series). I really love candybar-style phones, and I think the Pixi looks like it'll be great -- but I'm thinking if I go with a WebOS phone, I'll jump on the Pre bandwagon...but certainly won't look down my nose at anybody who picks up the Pixi. Just say no to phone snobbery!

I think Wi-fi will come in handy for me on occasions, because I get really good service on my phone, but sometimes, the signal likes to be finicky in the house...those are the moments kicking on wi-fi to get a better signal would be useful to me. So, it's a nice added feature, but certainly not one that'd be a deal-breaker either way.A lot of people also complain about lack of Wifi..... i NEVER use the wifi on my Pre because there is 1) never a need to, and 2) don't get wifi everywhere (as opposed to Evdo which I get everywhere). - 09-18-2009, 12:56 PM #12
well the pre didn't work FOR ME because the slider is quite flimsy in my opinion so i think id wait and get the pixi, it's a cheaper yet very similar WebOS device <3

Do you think you'll give WebOS a second look when the Pixi comes out, or will you be sticking with your Bold? I think my concerns about the sturdiness of the slider will be somewhat alleviated by the use of an on-screen keyboard.
Of course, it could also be that when the Pixi comes out, I try it out and decide that the slightly-less-powerful phone will work just fine for me. We'll see.
I think it's really hard to make a comparison between the two when one of them's not out yet.

I tried out a friends Pre and I think I'd opt for the Pre over the Pixi for the more powerful processor which comes in handy when running multiple apps like Twitter and Facebook and others that update constantly. My concern with the Pixi is the slower processor would get in the way of multitasking. I think the screen res is lower as well.

This is what the Pixi's processor will look like....
I don't know much about computer innards, so I don't know what all that'll mean....

I think the Pixi will fill a certain niche, though, and won't necessarily be a second-rate device. Just targeting a different group.Last edited by CNYBlackBerryAddict; 09-18-2009 at 06:28 PM.

My big fear is Verizon stripping down the Pre of features when they get it and it will be half of what the Pre for Sprint is
