For one, if you have iPods in your household you will have to use iTunes. It would be nice to use one application across different phone platforms. I understand Apple position on this.

Don't have to use itunes in terms of music sync, there are some alternatives, which I used on my ipod when I used it.

Depends on which platform. I don't use a mac, but for PC, ephpod supports syncing a lot of items:
EphPod - iPod for Windows (and Linux) :: HOME

I understand different alternative applications, I was referring to contents. iTunes Store does offer better HD Movie, Podcast, TV contents selection.

Yes, it's regarding syncing iTunes with Palm Pre. You don't use iTunes so you don't feel the problem.

Not to mention you still have the obvious workaround of not upgrading your iTunes for now, unless you really live or die by apple tv (which I doubt most do).
