Default Some Notorious Carriers in India practicing holding onto BlackBerry PIN

Currently, in India, there are many Carriers offering BlackBerry services. However, just to enlighten other fellow Indian users of some pitfalls these Carriers use, here's the BIGGIE .....

When you disconnect services from one Carrier and move to another one (be it within the country, i.e. India OR even if you plan to move abroad with your earlier BB device), apart from disconnection of the SIM, you also need to see to it that your BB PIN enlisted on the earlier Carrier's Server must be DELETED.

This is called
Releasing your BlackBerry PIN. If not, you will NOT be able to resume BlackBerry services with any other Carrier (within the country or abroad).

In India, it is noted that Bharti Airtel (one of the largest operators) and Reliance GSM are TWO such Carriers who practice the art of hanging onto existing customer's BB PINs on their Servers - as a ploy not to let you go with your device elsewhere.

Only way to get your PIN out of them is to know higher up hierarchy officials and requesting them by email to carryout the job and revert in writing by email to confirm its done !!

WTF!! what a pain ...

This is how it works everywhere in the world, not just in India. PIN's must be released from the carrier to be able to use it on a different one.

The best way to do it, is by sticking your SIM card in a different phone, and making a few calls or texts.

Because it unties that phone to your carrier. That PIN on the old phone is no longer tied to your phone number. They can't control the PIN if it isn't being used on their network.

I'm based in london, use vodafone UK. Recently been to India and took a prepaid sim with bb plan. Once I started using it, my pin got disconnected from vodafone uk and got BIS services from Airtel. When I returned a month later, I had to re-register my BIS with vodafone UK.

I didn't had to call them to release pin or anything.

I can confirm that none of the indian Carriers, Especially Airtel, hold on to your pin and not allow you to use it with other carriers. I'm a frequent traveller and keep switching sims and use my BB on different networks in various countries.

And yea. I'm going with Ethan as well, cz of his Avatar obviously
