i have a solution to using and getting blackberry services in china without paying extortionary costs.
if you're from the uk and heading to china this is the best solution to keep being able to use bb services:
firstly i haven't tested it yet myself with this particular network/sim but when i went i took my contract with me and used wifi only and was able to use everything.
1. you need an active BIS connection in the uk, thing is most networks dont offer it on pay as you go, but t mobile do and theres a great offer of £20 for 6 months BIS connection. the pay as you go sim is free too.
once thats set up and working fine in the uk move on to step 2.
2. now u have a working BIS connection in the uk, turn your data off before you travel to china and when u get there only use the wifi, so turn off the mobile network then turn wifi on, then turn data on.
you'll find that you'll be able to use ALL your applications BBM, etc everything! by only turning your data on when using wifi with the mobile network off you wont pay roaming charges.
3. last step, obviously you wont have wifi whereever you go although many places in china offer free wifi as part of their service i.e. cafes shops etc and the signals pass out onto the streets, but what you should do is purchase a china telecom wifi card, i cant remmeber how much it is per month (i heard its less than 100 yuan definitely so less than £9/month) but it's not ridiculously expensive and once thats set up, load your bb with it and have wifi on all the time BUT with your mobile network off. (tbh u dont even need to buy the wifi card as there is so many free wifi spots but if u want coverage anywhere and everywhere thats the solution)
there you'll have BB services at a fraction of the cost
i have to add that you will need to carry 2 phones around with you, the other will be your local chinese sim card.
even if you're not from the uk, this is a great deal as the sim card is free from t-mobile if you look on their website and just order the regular pay as you go sims, it's delivered to your home for free (if you're outside of the uk, obtaining the sim may be more difficult unless you have a friend in the uk who can post it to you)
all you need to do is call up customer services (there's even a landline number you can call to get through to them and a freephone number) get them to add the blackberry whatever it's called plan for 6 months for £20 (you can add £20 to the phone online by credit card even if you're abroad) and once it's added you just need to make sure that there is an active BIS connection and that your BB is already deregistered.
obviously this is better for people from the uk as they'll be able to make sure everything works before they jet off to china.
the active BIS connection for 6 months for only £20 is great, once the 6 months is up just call customer services again to readd it. just make sure you have £20 credit again to get another 6 months!
hope this helps.
