Bold 9700 on China Unicom

I have a Bold 9700 I bought second hand here in China and I got a friend to set me up on China Unicom's 3G service. The problem is that the service doesn't seem to be much faster than Edge and much more worringly the last two weeks I've gotten an automated SMS from them telling me I've used 0M of my 150MB a month limit.

My phone does say 3G in the top corner so is it simply that the service is slow and SMSs are wrong or have I forgotten something?


While I'm here, does Unicom have a BIS service? Is it worth getting?

What frequency are the running?

Uh, RIM had a special version which run on china's frequency. Its called 9788, which is basically the same as 9700 but run on a different 3G frequency.

I believe those are for China Mobile's 3G not China Unicom.

As for the frequency, not sure how to check. I can ask for support but that involves finding someone who can speak English well enough to translate highly technical terms into English. So I'd rather confirm that people on here get normal data usage messages from China Unicom first if that's possible.

Where in China are you? i'm currently using China Unicom BIS and it's the best in China right now. Their 3G is very fast i must say or maybe it's cuz i'm using 9900. I first used 9780 when i signed up and it's was great. BIS is 60rmb for a month.

I'm in Henan and not even in one of the big cities there. I think BIS is confined to just Beijing and Shanghai from what I've seen in previous posts.

can i have bis on prepaid? what is the best way to enjoy bis while on prepaid in china?
