BlackBerry services in the USA ?

My carrier is Orange UK on PAYG and I am going to California for 2 weeks .
I have never used my BlackBerry abroad & this will be the first time .

I realise that if I use BBM in the US , I will be receiving roaming costs .
I have come to the conclusion that if I switch off my mobile network and leave wifi on , that I should be able to use BBM without the roaming costs in a WIFI spot .

Will this work , or do I have to use a different method ?

Also when I switch off my mobile network , will my emails stop coming through ?
