I tried PAYG orange and I couldn't even get a signal in my room. Not even emergency.
I tried O2 and they were ok but the signal was quite bad in my area. I didn't like their customer service at all. Not helpful to sort out my signal problem. 25GBP a month
Finally, ended up with vodafone. Stuck with them to the end.
I think the cost was the best too @ 20GBP a month for 500MB, BIS, BBM, 300 mins (WHO CALLS IN THE UK ANYWAYS? EVERYONE TXTS) and unlimited text.
I would highly recommend vodafone because they were the only company who called me to find out why I am cancelling my services with them (leaving the country). Best signal even though it was still crappy in my area. | I agree... Vodafone is one of the best options in the UK.

I am with Vodafone aswell as O2 UK.
Vodafone seem to be a little cheeper than O2, however Vodafone customer services seem to talk to you as if you've insulted their mother, they are abrupt and seem to have something more important to do.
O2 are always helpful, they've searched & helped with certain problems Ive had and are all round pleasant.
I haven't had any signal problems with either network.
I'd pay the little extra and go with O2.

It's been a while since I've been in the UK.. But essentially we have the same providers here in Spain.. That being Vodafone, Orange, and Movistar (Which owns O2)... When I did live in the UK , I had Vodafone and Orange.. So...
From experience, this is what I can tell you: (Although it's just personal opinion):
- Orange is by far the best when it comes to value for money... I'm paying 20€ for 200MB full speed internet (then capped at 140KB/s (1.3Mbps)) and 300 minutes mon-fri, with all calls and texts free on weekends. I'd say they come second best after Vodafone when it comes to roaming..
- Vodafone for roaming, and roaming tariffs.. Unless you travel a lot, I don't really see any other reason to go this direction...
- O2 has exclusivity.. Remember they where the first to get the iPhone pretty much everywhere... And they're usually a few months ahead with their terminals in comparison to other providers.
Hope it helped...
PS: Some supermarkets have their own carriers, if you're not going anywhere that has particularily low signal, and they offer BB support, they may end up cheaper..
EDIT:
YouTube, and even Putlocker, Vimeo, and the likes (uZard <3) work fine after the cap, it's one of the reasons I keep loyal to Orange...
Honestly, other than that.. Yeah, minor providers who share signal with the big boys (GiffGaff and supermarket carriers, like Tescos etc..) may be an option.. It really just depends on balancing out if you want value for money or quality of service...

Im going for T-Mobile!
Very easy just to just fill out the form and done! Orange's site was a bit confusing and Vodafone too.
I think I will end up with O2 when 4G arrives!
