hey guys, i'm new to the world of blackberry and i just got an unlocked one of eBay recently. My issue is that with my old phone, if i couldn't connect with my home network (tmobile) then I could connect with Unicel and AT&T if their service was better, but I can't do this with my new BB. I'm sure it is unlocked cause my girlfriend (unicel) put her SIM in and she could get Unicel. Pretty much m question is why can't I roam on other networks like I could with my old phone?

    Welcome to CB!

One thing I can think of you to check and you may already have, is:
Manage Connections > Mobile Network Options > Network Selection Mode, set to Automatic

thanks for the welcome rlp, but to answer your question, it does work. It can connect to t-mobile (it will say data connection refused) but i can still make calls.

I would call tmo and ask for tech support for blackberry. They will be able to help you better. Tyroni is correct also. Sounds to me like something is wrong on your sim card settings..if your friends worked then to me i would think it was your card. Worth a shot. Keep us posted. If you need help farther than that feel free to email me.

so i called tmo tech support and the answer i got was that unicel operates under gsm 850 and my berry reads the gsm 900, which makes sense and answer my question, but occasionally I pick up a carrier: "310-890" which I understood was unicel. Is 310 unicel's 900 ghz? thanks for the help so far guys

You know what,I was looking at your phone specs and it appears to only be dual band. 900/1900 Mhz GSM/GPRS networks. What I would do is either get a 7290 which does run on 85o GSM also. I do have weak spots around here and pick up other carriers. If you look around on the ebay I'm sure you can get one rather cheap. Or even get an 8700....nice phone also.
