7290 and 6230

Ok I just received these 2 models from my father whom just passed away about a month ago.
Both were on plans and have been canceled.

What I'd like to do is turn them both over to prepaid for my wife and myself.

The 7290 was with Cingular while the 6230 (blue) was with T Mobile.

I know I can buy sim cards for both cellular companies but I'm not positive that will work.

I did not receive cables/charger with either phone.

I guess what I'm looking for here is some advice on what my first move should be towards getting both phones up to date on software and getting some prepaid service to both of them.

After further review the 7290 doesn't seem to turn on at all.
I'm pressing the same key I press on the other one to turn it on and all it does is change the screen brightness.
