Default Tungle and Gist Founders Leave BlackBerry After Launching BlackBerry 10

Tungle and Gist Founders Leave BlackBerry After Launching BlackBerry 10

BlackBerry acquired Tungle and Gist awhile back to upgrade the calendar and contacts system in BlackBerry 10. Now that those acquisitions have started to pay dividends it seems like they have lost the founders of both those companies. The WSJ is reporting that TA McCann, VP in charge of Social Networks, left BlackBerry two weeks ago. He was head of BlackBerry Messenger, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn apps. Marc Gringas, founder of Tungle, also left in recent weeks and he was in charge of the contacts and calendar apps along with the HUB.

Its a shame to see them go but hopefully BlackBerry has some replacements lined up. Rumors have it that these execs either left because they “simply had it” with BlackBerry struggling or due to the “entrepreneurial itch” of wanting to start another company.

Good riddance for the social networking guy. The social networking apps on BlackBerry suck buttermilk.

Maybe they got fired? I mean BBM on BB10 is pretty good and I really like it, so is the Hub, but IMO that's it regarding to the list above. The calendar app is just ok, an improvement from the legacy OS for sure, but making it worse would've been rather difficult anyways. I haven't used LinkedIn, but Twitter and Facebook are pretty lackluster to say the least. In some ways, I even prefer the legacy Twitter app before the new, native BB10 app in terms of features and usability. That is quite a sad thing once you consider how long they've been developing and delaying the new OS.

Edit: Nevermind, just read again both left on their own. Which rises questions why...

BlackBerry is losing allot of execs lately. That can't be the best sign for the future of the company.

These two though, didn't really deliver as BBM on BlackBerry 10 aside from BBM video really is lacking compared to BBM on legacy BBOS in some ways. Facebook and Twitter on BB10 are both widely criticized as well.

The Hub is a great concept but even it needs some overhaul to make it really shine as a key differentiator for BlackBerry.

Maybe these two exec's departures will create openings for some really talented new blood that can take BBM and the Hub to the next level.

Heck, in the interim until new permanent replacements for the two vacant roles can be found, just put Gary Klassen back at the helm of BBM if he has the time with his other responsibilities at the company.

How so? With the exception of being able to add an SMS contact, I find it works a lot better on BlackBerry 10 than before. Love the recommendation feature. Love seeing avatars everywhere. The UI is nicer looking IMO, and a lot more functional. Love the video chat. Love the screen share. Groups are easier to get to.

I like how BlackBerry 10 is evolving, but when are they going to fix BlackBerry Link for Mac?

The fact that it doesn't reliably do what it's supposed to do ... most of the time ... is utterly appalling. The only consistency is the "Music not copied to Z10 message"

They left because they weren't hired, they were bought. Typically, when one company aquire another, part of the deal is the main talent, or the founder and driver in the case of small companies, stay on board for a predetermined amount of time to help with the transition. These two companies were purchased at around the same time and it comes as no surprise that the guys would want to leave. They weren't employees before BlackBerry and, more than likely, don't want to be employees for anyone. They both have millions from the sales of their perspective companies and can open a new one or two, or simply go enjoy their riches for a while.

There is the little thing about executive retention bonuses expiring/being paid out. The retention programs were put in place to keep key executives in place while BB10 was being developed/launched. With those retention programs now expired, it seems as though those who have options elsewhere are leaving. I'm not saying that this is a vote of non-confidence in BBRY or Thorsten Heins' leadership but it would be important to note the simple fact that these executives had no choice but to stay in they wanted these bonuses.

I'm guessing it's to save money by not paying their presumably high salaries.
