Gotta love pure speculation

Quote:
After a recent case in Pakistan, RIM issued a statement saying: "Like others in our industry, from time to time, we may receive requests from legal authorities for lawful access assistance."

The statement added: “We are guided by appropriate legal processes and publicly disclosed lawful access principles in this regard, as we balance any such requests against our priority of maintaining the privacy rights of our users.”
The kind of policy I want in place, were one of my family members murdered.

Okay???? Not sure what this is meant to imply. If it was a RIM assisted situation, involving a court order, then of course they accessed it. It wasnt hacked...

Exactly it wasn't hacked. But this is not the way french medias are presenting the news in Quebec. They are implying that the police was able to decrypt the messages... Making RIM look like their communications are not safe..

The Gazette article is more nuanced.

The media always has a habit of enhancing a story, to make it more interesting than it is. I'd let the facts play out, before jumping to conclusions. If the police did decrypt the messages, without permission, the evidence wouldn't be allowed in court, so..............

The difference is that law enforcement agencies have the telcos on check permanently and getting a peek at your communications is like stopping by for some donuts.
To check on your BB data they need a specific court order and RIM's cooperation.

Exactly. Nothing that was illegally obtained would hold up or court, nor be sealed by the court.

Generally speaking a BB is MUCH more secure than ANY other (commercial) device, BUT with a court order they CAN be checked. And guess what folks, even withOUT they can be checked too, BUT it's much more difficult they any other commercially available device. I know someone who does it for a living.

"As a result, communications using BlackBerry Messenger are believed to be favoured by organized-crime figures."

I would hope they're smart enough to be on BES.

If RIM helped decrypt the communications, it must have been BIS. After all, if it's BES, RIM supposedly doesn't have the key. Ya, sure ... Unless it's organized crime. Funny how there's never any mention of BIS versus BES whenever RIM helps the police bust crime.
