Default [Rumor] NOAA drops BlackBerry, embraces iPhone and iPad

NOAA drops BlackBerry, embraces iPhone and iPad | TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog

Here we go again...

This is starting to look like a trend. This time, it is the government sector. Can't help but feel the timing is significant. There must be something going on behind the scenes. Perhaps these former RIM clients have seen BB10 and are voting with their feet. At any rate, two high-profile defections in a week likely gives others the confidence to do the same.

That last paragraph seems to indicate a BYOD movement here rather than handing them out as corporate owned devices.

The snow ball is in motion. The only thing stopping or slowing it down is a massive heat wave that is a BB10 product.
Oh wait...sorry that won't be available until the end of this year. RIM didn't even show one device at the European devcon! sigh

According to the memo from Klimavicz, NOAA will now support employees with iPhone 4 and newer smartphones running iOS 5 or later, as well as iPad 2 or newer tablets running iOS 5 or later.
Sounds like iPhones and iPads.

Me thinks you need to look up what the word 'devcon' stands for.

Here's a hint: It doesnt include the word consumer.

It sounds like they are moving away from the cost of BES... so it is really a twofold slap in the "pocketbook" for RIM.

I think it's both...

While a February 3rd memo from NOAA Chief Information Officer and Director for High Performance Computing and Communications Joseph Klimavicz noted that support for BlackBerrys will continue until May 12, 2012, it does not say when the government organization will actually start providing workers with the new Apple devices.

Not a good sign for RIM if a gov agency is taking this step

The Loop is reporting that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is taking RIM BlackBerry devices off of the list of officially supported mobile devices.

There will be more such announcements coming over the next couple of months from more US agencies. Good Technologies is going around the govt with a really strong pitch. RIM doesn't appear to be countering.

Plus the govt can't know now who might own the RIM NOC in 2013.

Reported by 2 websites we have never heard of, so I would not put too much stock in it.

The OP got a thread closed about apple today because it wasn't blackberry news but bad for apple. All the OP does is search and search for bad news about RIM to post. It must be a life passion.

If a bad story about apple doesn't belong on this site then apple users don't belong on this site as what does it have to with bb.

What's needed is for a Canadian government agency to make a definitive statement that they stand by RIM no matter what. Frankly, I'm surprised I haven't seen such statements yet. The drumbeat of defection can't just keep going unchallenged.
