I'm convinced this guy is completely out of touch, and has not properly studied all markets. By his own admission, it will only take about 8-10 million device sales for this to be a success. Personally, if you do the global math on RIM, I would not bet against them. 8 millions handset sales is only a 10% current subscriber refresh rate....totally doable IMO

At the start, the Jeffries analyst is totally dissing RIM and saying that they will get taken over. But at the end he says that BB10 is better than Android!!

the facts are Misek is an expert on RIM, the funny part is at the end where he stunned the interviewers with his answer, they are stunned but you can see them thinking:
but if BB10 runs all the android apps and Android cannot run BB10 apps, how on earth could BB10 fail?

even if people try to make the case against RIM, they can't, very entertaining video.......

Many of the apps that I want on the PlayBook now are still only available if you sideload it - average consumers are not going to be interested in sideloading. And even then there are many that just don't work, or you have to go back and load a much older version of the app that has fewer features. I think Google has figured out a way to prevent most of their newer apps from running on the PlayBooks VM.

I just spotted this Misek character on BBC America this morning as they were talking about RIM in one of their business segments. He certainly hedged his statements with quite a few qualifiers. Until now I'd never seen his face.

I think Google has figured out a way to prevent most of their newer apps from running on the PlayBooks VM.

I'd rather keep sideloading. It's a pretty cool feature. Something for the tech nerds to tinker with. That's one of the reasons why Android is so popular. Same with iOS. They have a big rooting community.

Much of this is designed behavior. PBOS was never intended to just be able to pick up an Android executable and run it unmodified. There are a few factors involved, and not all Android apps will even convert to a form where they'll be functional.

The whole point of the Android Runtime was just to give developers who already had a bunch of Android apps an easy opportunity to offer them to Playbook users (and soon, BB10). And the intention was that it would be up to the developer to decide whether or not he wanted to offer it on BB. Sideloading wasn't meant to be easy.

And it's not that Google has "figured out a way" to lock out the Android Player. It's only compatible with Android up to 2.3 or so. Any newer Android apps would not work.

Bringing this thread back on topic.......

The prospects of RIM being bought at this point in RIM's business cycle is simply all wrong, for any number of reasons. Typically buyers want to buy for the lowest cost and as of this point, RIM has sunk significant CAPEX and OPEX into BB10 for which they will want to re-monetize, obviously at the buyers expense. Additionally, BB10 while looking very good is an unknown quantity in the market which presents a difficult valuation proposition. QNX with its future potential beyond the smartphone would yield significant premium, especially if it was resold as a separate standalone business.

I can see how the casual observer might look at RIM's financials and see a company with a low stock price and relatively large asset portfolio to be a ripe target when you look exclusively at the P&L's. That tells only one side of the story and we hope RIM has more history to write before it gets put out to pasture.

...of course there's always the chance of an eccentric billionaire with an unhealthy obsession ……..

This is a hilarious interview. . .the only reason BB10 is a "neat operating system" is because it can run android apps??? Guess he really didn't want to hype RIM up at all. . .
