Is RIMM getting the short end of the stick? Verizon to choose WP7 as third platform
Verizon interested in Windows Phone as its 'third ecosystem' | The Verge
During its first quarter earnings call earlier today, Verizon expressed renewed interest in Windows Phone emphasizing its need for a "third ecosystem".
Verizon's EVP and CFO, Fran Shammo claimed that Microsoft has the provider's full support:
"I do think, though, it is important that there is a third ecosystem that is brought into the mix here, and we are fully supportive of that with Microsoft. And as we said that we created the Android platform from beginning, and it is an incredible platform today that we helped create, and we are looking to do the same thing with a third ecosystem. So that is how I think that we plan to go into the future here."
Can RIMM fight the all of the giants by themselves? Chance is not good. RIMM's BBOS 10 is not likely to gain any critical mass if they do not get enough support from carriers.
What do you all think? - 04-19-2012, 04:47 PM #2
Verizon really had no choice...

If BB10 is really good then nobody can stop it..no matter what it will survive and if it is not then obviously RIM has to do something drastic like Nokia did.
In all fairness Blackberry has got a better reputation than anything Microsoft in the mobile space.
But looking at the BB world preview, I am pretty optimistic that BB10 is going to be awesome.

Also, carriers can't really support something that isn't here, let's wait for carrier testing and BB10 launch to see how they handle the coveted 3rd ecosystem party.

This is a total truth...
RIM is still a contender but the Black Sheep, if you will, right now...
MS will be releasing their new Win 8 soon which will translate and co-operate well with their next WP OS... Hence, Verizon had no choice...
I am optimistic in RIM's favor with the future release of BB10, because even though it is not a "proven platform", it's like the Swiss Army Knife of mobile OS's... QNX has more potential than most people give it credit...
Also, businesses are in business to make money... You go with something proven or you gamble fortunes on something that is not... Take Verizon's decision how you wish, but know that they are not turning a blind eye to RIM... They're tapping their fingers on the desk... - 04-19-2012, 06:06 PM #6

yeah if anything T-mobile created it. the G1 was huge for T-mobile and introduce everyone to Android. goodbye sidekick phones. Now what Verizon did is advertise Android to death. I guess they will be doing the same with WP7 which should help sales

I doubt that because ATT is already running ads and promotions on Lumia and it is not helping much. Windows Phone 8 as anticipated will have a Windows NT kernel but it is a Hercules task for Microsoft to deliver it before the year end and what Verizon is saying is that they will push Windows 8 and not Windows 7.5.

I have said this countless times before, RIM/BB is no longer a mobile device competitor. That article plus the fact that BB is never talked about in the mobile world is proof positive. WP7 has now over shadowed BB.

RIM just needs a hero device and carriers need one desperately no matter who brings it - Windows or a Blackberry or something else..they are wanting to diversify and who ever has that first hero device will be lead the pack for the third position and by the looks of it Windows Phone is not there yet and neither do Blackberry..all this talk is a thrash talk until then...with changing times a lot of things change, come year end we will have a clear picture.

Maybe it's just me but i do not get Windows Phone. It is ( in my opinion ) a horrible OS. Here we are in 2012 and i thought "Finally. With BlackBerry, Android and others. We could rid the world of Apple and Microsoft operating systems. There really is no need to use them anymore". Oh no. Microsoft is shoving a mobile phone down our throats.

When was the last time a BB device got a rave review? Or when was it a best seller on Amazon? WP7 is picking up speed and has been getting glowing reviews all across the board. Your in the minority.

ok, i think the carriers are forgetting about RIM, much like many consumers, sadly. THIS is why sales reps dont know about/care about/offer and sell Blackberry devices.
in regard to bb10, if its going to launch this year, the carriers will be deciding VERY soon to support/launch them AND that means they'll be working with RIM on the details and begin testing the devices on their respective networks.
verizon just seems to go with the flow, which is NOT a very good long term business strategy. sure, they make loads of cash (helps their plans/data pricing is high) and they do advertise very well. however, if they neglect to launch bb10 devices, they will soon be scrambling to catch up to those who do. for them to claim winmo devices as a 3rd platform and ignore Blackberry, i feel, will be a big mistake.

Right now the new Lumia Windows phones are another 'option'...a 3rd option
When BB10 is launched it will be another 'option'
I think carriers will gladly stand behind 4 strong players
I've read Lumia 900 phones are selling well and reviews seem to be good

What are they gonna do, sell a platform that doesn't exist yet?

You thought that? Really?
I have a Windows phone, the HTC Radar. It really isn't bad. In my estimation, it's still immature, but it's outstandingly smooth, even on hardware with modest specs. I have little doubt that WP8 will do better. The release date will be around the same as BB10, so they say. But WP8 will have the advantage of over a year of WP7 to learn from.
And WP developers are taking aim at Enterprise needs: http://www.wpcentral.com/good-enterp...-windows-phone. So even though BB is still way ahead of WP in market share, I also take the view that the immediate situation is the battle for third place. MS is very hungry for it. - 04-19-2012, 09:25 PM #21
What the heck do i care what some hipster on a tech blog says ?
Really. It's all about personal preference. I hate the whole windows style tile things. Second of all i don't own an XBOX, I own a PS3. Third, I am sick to death of WINDOWS. Last of all, i do not give a flying F*** what CNET has to say.
I love my Blackberry products. I do not care for Windows. This is MY opinion. You people can flame me all you want. I really don't care. Please sign this petition to bring Netflix to BlackBerry. Help your BlackBerry brothers and sisters.

Really I can't blame Verizon. The last time they went all out for RIM they got hosed, **cough Storm cough**. Every since then I think they have been taking a wait see and approach to RIM. If BB10 is successful, they will jump onboard and throw MS to the wolves because a lot of businesses and the government use BB and not so much WP7.

now that is a very mature response.....your bias precedes you,
Its very simple, grow up and if you wish someone to "calm down" as you condescendingly put it, then quit trolling with your comments... A fine example is "WP7 has now over shadowed BB." which by every market report, analysis and opinion, is a outright LIE..
