RIM Quietly Adds Support for OS 4.5 and Up to BlackBerry Messenger 7 w/BBM Voice

Back on December 10 2012ResearchIn Motion released BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) v7.0.0.126. When BBM version 7.0.0.126 hit BlackBerry World there was only support for OS 6, 7 and 7.1 devices. It seem as though RIM has quietly added support for OS 4.5 and higher now. BBM 7 includes BBM Voice which allows for FREE WiFi calling to any of your BBM contacts that have it installed on their BlackBerry smartphone. Hit the break for more.

UPDATE 01-27-2013 : While it is known for a few days (weeks ?) now, BBM7 beta is now supporting OS5+ devices.

Quite generous of RIM to develop support for such old devices with BlackBerry 10 right around the corner - good on them!

I've got a Curve 8530 with OS 5, and still not seeing it. App world says BBM is now not supported by my device. :|

Okay so even if support is added, are there any OS 4.5 or 5 phones out there that have wifi antennas? Don't you have to have wifi for BBM voice?

Yes, the 85XX series has wifi, I think some of the 83XX series does too.

For information :

8820 has wifi
8320 has wifi
8520 has wifi
9000 has wifi
9300 has wifi

so yes a lot of blackberries with OS 4.5, 4.6, 5 have wifi and will take advantage of the voice possibility of the new BBM
