Exclamation Report: Microsoft and Nokia Also Flirted with RIM

O, Canada! On the heels of yesterday's report that Amazon got a little tipsy and tried to take a peek up RIM's skirt last summer comes the WSJ's news that both Microsoft and Nokia thought about buying the beleaguered BlackBerry maker. Sheesh, RIM, people are gonna start talking.

There's no word on whether the talks are still proceeding or how far they got, but one thing is clear: RIM's sending up serious distress flares. And while its potential partners—or competitors—would be fools not to take the chance to comb through the company's books, the impression right now is that RIM doesn't have the kind of booty that people want to loot. Today in one of the two main national papers this bit of news was published in relation to Microsoft and Nokia willing to purchase RIM.

Amazon is also interested... "Amazon considered buying BlackBerry maker"

But RIM isn't interested in selling... "But RIM's management has told interested parties they do not want to sell or break up the company at this juncture, the sources told Reuters. After last week's news, the board instructed the co-CEOs to set aside any options for a sale, one person briefed on the situation said."

I'd much rather see RIM sell to someone that would keep the company whole, than let it die a slow death and eventual be bought out by some group for only it's part. But most everything I've read has indicated that selling a Canadian company is very difficult... maybe once RIM moves most of their staff overseas it will make it easier.
