I don't why people complain about decent flash support on BB's os. You/They act like it's a "one or the other" thing. Like they spent time adding flash so now their HTML5 sucks. Where the fact is Playbook OS 2.0 has the highest HTML5 score out of any mobile devices, and the 2nd highest score out of any browser for any device platform/operating system for that matter.
If HTML 5 was Steve's vision why wasn't his the best in class? Granted now I believe with iOS6 it's supposed to have faster HTML5 rendering but still not as high of a HTML5 compatibility score.
RIM offered, at the time, the best in class for Flash and HTML5 support and there's no reason they won't continue to keep up with edge of technologies now that they're on it. Even bb7 devices have very good HTML5 compatibility scores and that's their legacy OS.
They partnered with Adobe to work on their flash player. Flash has always sucked in the sense of being a resource hog. HTML5 offered the nextgen alternative in features without sucking the resources. I doubt RIM ever thought that they were going to ride the Flash wave for years to come. But it's really nice to have since many many sites will be slow to adapt outside of the top 10%. And even some of them are being slow to adapt.
I just don't see any valid point where the added feature of flash is a con.
In closing, if I really don't want flash because maybe I'm using a site riddled with flash banners, or maybe I just hate flash because it slept with my girlfriend, I can opt to turn flash off. iOS users can't opt to turn flash on. It's nice to have the freedom of choice.. options.Last edited by doobiest; 07-09-2012 at 05:34 PM.

I second this in the sense that I loooove linux, but I want to be able to run some windows apps on it well. If there's a killer app on windows, that doesn't mean windows is better or I'm dumb or I should go buy a windows 7 pc. It means that the developers of that app chose that community for specific reasons. But I unfortunately wasn't bread in that community. It doesn't make my desire to use their software any less.
Windows has dominated the gaming market for two decades, but the developers are starting to push their wares on all three PC platforms. It's not a which is better thing, it's about what motivates the devs, what's their incentives... Linux has a small desktop user base compared to windows and osx, but Steam sees the value in porting their platform to linux.
I think it's a chicken and egg thing, "why would we write our games for linux, there's no user base" versus "theres no user base because none of us has manned up and wrote our games for linux yet"

Using this logic, do you still want the choice of a 5-1/4" floppy drive? How about the option of a horse?
Technology has passed up the need for moused based Flash. The world has too many choices for things that really matter. It is nice to have a device that you don't need to make choices on how to use it.
How many buttons on your Universal Remote do you actually use? - 07-14-2012, 01:05 AM #262
A horse or a floppy disc don't really provide much that is useful these days, unlike Flash.
It's always the disciples of Jobs that are so worried about denouncing Flash and proclaiming its irrelevance. It works quite well for the rest of the computing world.
You may like having someone else make your choices, but don't make that choice for us...one of these days see me drivin' round town in my rock 'n' rolls Royce with the sun roof down

It appears that Adobe made a choice for you, too.
Flash to Focus on PC Browsing and Mobile Apps; Adobe to More Aggressively Contribute to HTML5
Flash was needed ten years ago. Now it is a proprietary tech that outlived its usefulness, - 07-14-2012, 11:52 AM #264
There's a difference between dying and dead. For example, SJ was dying when he made his proclamation, now he's dead. Although he was dying, he was still useful... And Flash is still useful to many of us despite the box that SJ has painted you into that requires you to walk in lockstep with them, proclaiming its early demise.
If you ever get in an accident or a disease, i hope your doctor appreciates the difference.one of these days see me drivin' round town in my rock 'n' rolls Royce with the sun roof down

Tell that to Netflix. Remember when they spun off their dying dvd mailing business?

Did you even read the link you posted? Seems to me like it is talking about the continuation of Flash. It's only the mobile version that is ending. Flash will still be used to make apps and then they are packaged in Adobe AIR for HTML5 usage on mobile. Doesn't sound like it's dead to me..

Flash is still dead.
Ad agencies (the biggest supporter of Flash) are now creating all ads in HTML5 using Adobe tools for the largest saturation (i.e., desktop, laptop, mobile). Any advertiser that wants to write new material in Flash will be giving up exposure to the iOS user.
In case you haven't heard, iOS users are the ones that open their wallets.
Apple has allowed developers to build conversions for Flash in their apps, but Flash as a stand alone plug-in, which has been widely known as a virus magnet, will no longer be the first choice for developers.
So enjoy viewing your antiquated, Flash-powered banner ads and videos while they last. - 07-14-2012, 09:47 PM #270

So... Apple must be lightyears ahead of RIM if they're supporting html5 that strongly...
Right?
Right...?
Oh....

Righ now giving up flash for html5 is a lot like giving up gasoline for electric cars. You problalby can, but it will still be around for a long time yet.
