Back to the article though, while I can't see Ford buying RIM (maybe they buy QNX if RIM sells it...) but it is too bad the RIM board can't hire someone like Mulally to fix RIM.

I've been crying for a Mulally style leadership for a long time.
RIM has the talent,
RIM has the tools
what RIM lacks is clear leadership, and clear goal setting.
Delay after delay, is caused by lack of goal setting, and keeping on top of project, letting a small part of a project derail the entire project, the Business plan review Meetings by Mr Mulally would get RIMs teams on track and get real target dates, that are achievable, there would be OPEN AND CLEAR progress so you don't have CEO's stating things that are so far from the truth it back lashes.

I could see a partnership with RIM, so that Ford could get access to QNX for the next generation of the Sync system especially since Ford has been running into issues with the MyFord Touch system, but not an outright ownership. One of the reasons for Ford's success, was they divested themselves of things that were not of the core Ford brand. Ford's investors would not see that as a good move and Ford would be better off using the money to continue to pay down their debt so that they can better compete with GM and Chrysler who dumped a lot of their debt due to the government bailouts, then use the money to buy RIM.

This makes no sense because Ford is entrenched in Microsoft's Embedded Automotive software. If they used QNX to power their embedded systems then it would, but unfortunately they don't. Automotive Solutions | Connected Services | Windows Embedded Automotive 7
Using this logic then perhaps GM or Toyota should buy RIM. They've been using QNX in their automotive systems practically forever now. Perhaps BlackBerry could be turned into a super-desirable high end brand if Daimler bought them and gave them the Mercedes Benz branding?

It would be extremely smart for a car manufacturer to acquire a mobile maker like RIM but I would expect some of the more high end luxury car companies (Lexus, BMW etc) to jump at the opportunity. but then again RIM has such poor management of the company over the past few years that I doubt anyone will make an offer that they are happy enough with.
In the meantime. I'm working on integrating my 64GB playbook into my Lexus IS which will include clear 4G service. so screw the car manufacturers

So, Ford would pay $14 billion (RIM's rumored asking price) for an operating system in their cars? No, I just don't think it's even a possibility.
If they are going to use a mobile computing software in their car, wouldn't it make more sense to just use Android? Or better yet, equip each car with an iPad? Heck, even equip it with 3g radios and do the same thing they do with satelitte radio. Make it free for 6 months and then start charging for it. I'm not saying any of these are better solutions, just MUCH, MUCH cheaper for a company who hasn't had the best couple of years recently.
Edit: Add Content
I take back my original comment of it not being a possibility. I just think there are other more cost efficient solutions than Ford entering an entire new industry by purchasing $14 billion for a mobile user interface.
