Default Obama to keep his Blackberry

President-elect Barack Obama can keep his blackberry but only for personal use. Anything government related will have to use an NSA approved device.

Whats amusing is that BlackBerry devices were approved for use by the NSA circa 2002.

BlackBerry - BlackBerry Press Releases

They also are NSA suite B secure.

I would imagine that for the leader of the free world the powers that be probably wanted a more recent security benchmark than 2002.

The issue, i would have to guess would be that all data goes through RIM's servers, which are not even located in this country (at least not all of them). AES encryption has yet to be broken and is still a government standard (banks, etc use this as well). The secret service uses BlackBerry devices, military, even NSA uses them currently.

Really, he is going to be PRESIDENT of the UNITED STATES, can they really stop him from keeping it?? Legally???

I do not care for him as a president, but he is the PRESIDENT, of the country I live in and feel a great deal of patriotism for. Lets not tur this into a political debate.

Yep, he's an employee of the government, and a highly privileged one at that. It's (well, it used to be...now) a security assurance to keep things inside of the executive branch that shouldn't be let out.

Like you, I will support him for the sole reason that he is the president of this amazing country. Other than that, it will take his actions for me to respect him as such. This goes with anybody, not only the president.

SO...Back to the issue at hand, will he carry his 7xxx series BB with pride like he does his 8xxx series?!?! Only time will tell...

I hope he keeps his BB. Lots of press this weekend about his BB. RIM has gotta love the free publicity.

Thank you,
I do believe the posts to Cnet with the features of those phones were on topic. I'll repost if necessary but seems like some posts from myself and others trying to keep things on topic were lost in the mix of silliness.

So since any official communications he sends/receives are subject to scrutiny, how will they (whoever they are) be able to assure he's only using his BB for personal use. Will all his calls/messages/data be monitored kind of like how an Admin can monitor company phones?

I am glad to see he was able to keep it. I think it will be to his (and ultimately our) advantage that he'll be able to have access to real time data...not JUST what his advisors and aides filter through to him.

I wonder if he has BBM!!!

:O

LoL, all jokes aside. Good job for Barack standing his ground on keeping it.. I know when I had to send mine off to Colorware for two days I almost had a nervous break down... Lord knows 4 years (possibly 8) without it would be like torture.
