Well both Industry insiders yes, but you do need someone with wireless industry experience for both of these roles. Its too early to tell how things will go, but I dont think there was any doubt someone with industry experience (extensive) was going to take these positions.

hiring from outside the company is not the definition of "insiders"..........

They're both outside hires, so I'm not sure what the problem is.

I'm sure Mr. Heins knows what he is doing. BTW, Mr. Heins is an insider. Not Mr. Tear and Mr. Boulben.

They're not RIM insiders - they have experience in the wireless telecom industry with different companies. I think this is good news, although I'm not familiar with either of these men.

Agreed. I'm looking at the wall street point of view. The street has been yelling for change and honestly I was hoping for an outsider who had an experience of a brand turn around (CMO). Can't think of a name at this moment. I'm still LONG RIMM and I believe in THOR.

The new CMO was last in charge of Marketing and Sales at Lightsquared. I hadn't heard of them - so up popped Wikipedia:

"As of April, 2012, LightSquared was in negotiations with creditors to avoid bankruptcy."

    Oh.

@kevin. I was just gonna post that. My apologies to the board. Read too fast, thought they were insiders. Too excited to post, lol.

    Oh.
That wasnt to do with marketing. Its a whole bunch of FCC crap not letting them do their business.

    Oh.
This really isn't saying anything. Whatever the reasons for the mentioned company "falling" doesn't necessarily mean it was the new CMO's fault.

I'd say give it time. Honestly, with BBWorld which started this time last week and this announcement today, I believe it shows they are hard at work in getting the job done.

If BB10 platform and devices are to launch in Oct/Nov sometime during the summer, I believe RIM is going to need some serious marketing done to push the new stuff. The CMO who worked with 2 carriers is great. He knows their language and can be an asset. There is always room for things to go wrong, but why dwell on the negative? Fresh meat to a company which is trying to re-energize. That's something to be applauded.

    Oh.
Might as well put that in context...

LightSquared is challenging the FCC's action
They got too ambitious. They wanted to sell wholesale network capacity and the FCC smacked them down because of the potential to interfere with military frequencies and GPS systems. They went out of their way to deal with any interference issues and were still shot down.

Likely, there were other also carriers who stood to gain from LightSquared not interfering with their grasp on the market. I don't think you can blame the new CMO for industry colluding against an upstart new technology that threatens their incumbency.

    Never said it did.

Lightsquared failed for many reasons, their marketing wasn't one of them ... at least from my understanding of the situation.

Lightsquare failed from not being granted an FCC license for their product. It interfered with GPS signals.

I think this is good news. To be frank, the fact that they hired someone for the position is what is important.

It all these 2 are able to do is a small positive shift in the way BlackBerry is percieved, I'd call that a "Win".

Of Course, that alone would be a small Miracle.

The company never got through the FCC for him to have something to market. But if you look at the jobs before that he did marketing for that no name company Orange and even more obscure Vodaphone . Way to look for the negative though.

This was going to be Springs LTE until the US government intervened. There was a congressional hearing and they were denied the use of that spectrum. I'm sure the CMO had little to do with it, but I'm sure the FCC will be aware of his LightSquared past.
Why is it that when your contract commitment is up, the phone you always wanted is now old and the phone you now want won't be out until the next quarter?

Down again. Even the market know that RIM's problems have little to do with marketing; it has to do with what they are trying to sell.
